Indeed. Once you realize this it doesn't take very long to get excited about statically typed languages, especially with type inference.

That is an interesting project but won't yet help to speed up the (very slow) JSON unmarshalling.

I'm not aware of one that's broadly-based though I'd love to find it. Slashdot used to be, although I haven't frequented it in many years.

While I'd love to see more of that thing, I don't really think of HN as a technical venue. More like a virtual pub frequented by a variety of folks who participate in the VC ecosystem in one way or another.

Or at least they're seeking to avoid having to have execution traders on staff who can manage their order flow.

Programmer == Labor; don't ever forget it. The overwhelmingly largest share of returns accrue to capital. It's a good idea to resist being cast in the role of simply "programmer" over time, for this reason.

Nope. (edit): - Massive network effects - User base has the (excellent) UX hard-wired in muscle memory [1] - Cost is immaterial to the audience - Absolutely superb, market-standard analytics [2] [1] One older gent I know asked me why his Ou

Given that each educational cashflow is 0-22 years in the future, carrying at a discounted NPV would be more appropriate. Whatever the assumption, carrying at the multi-decade-forward FV is a bit punitive.

This is an extraordinarily important point and one that nearly everyone misses. Treasuries are some of the most liquid instruments that exist, especially at shorter durations.

1. This is not backup, it's network storage with sync. 2. If Google shutters Google Drive you'll be able to get your data off of it and move it to another vendor's solution.

Have you considered doing an early access program or draft editor list? I would be interested in either if you chose to do so.

I didn't, it was pretty hand-wave-y. But I do know a fairly large number of people in the Bay Area tech scene so I took stock of what they were saying, in particular around hiring difficulties. Also, I did some tinkering with the thing

They are a tiny company. They don't compete with anybody, at least in the sense that another firm would view them as a threat. That said, the addressable market I would focus on is the one that IB does. Retail equity platforms are nume

Here is the answer: simple supply and demand. If you enjoy and are skilled at something, you should be able to productively contribute to many different organizations. You'll need to take the set of organizations that you'd like t

Love this - and the team seems excellent. I'd view the competition as Interactive Brokers, not E*TRADE or Fidelity. If I didn't love my job so much I'd be schwangling my way in to try and get in the door there.

Totally agree. Go is a superb systems language. But I wouldn't use it for a CRUD web app, nor for quasi-exploratory data pipelines, which is where IMO such generic functional combinators are clutch. It is however awesome when you'

The sense I've gotten is that the Go team is surprised how little complaint has arisen among actual Go users about the lack of generics, and that that has kept the priority level low for figuring out how to implement them. In other wor

There's a saying in the rates market: "don't counter-trend trade the front end". I lost $7 million dollars in minutes by being short $700 million of US 2yr notes when the levees failed during the hurricane Katrina disast
