I'm shocked to see an IPO for one of these delivery companies. Not because there doesn't seem to be a value proposition, but because I don't understand what sets them apart from the competition. They seem to be in a flooded m

Perhaps the better question is, how is this better than Google Spreadsheets? Most of your reasons still apply, but I believe google docs handles large spreadsheets pretty well (after an initial loading phase).

To clarify the comment re: Bill Gates biggest regret, his biggest regret according to the referenced article was that Microsoft never shipped WinFS. He did not regret the product itself. It was unclear to me what the parent meant, as my fir

I haven't tried Atom since one of its earlier releases. I haven't tried it again since the slowness seems to be the number one complaint. I figure when it's not the most common complaint, maybe it'll be worth another sho

A colleague of mine really likes VSCode for Node, as it's more of an IDE than Sublime text. However, for text editing, outside of vim itself, I haven't encountered anything remotely as good as sublime text. Really. Why would I use

It sounds like maybe you need a better network of strong recommendations that you would personally find interesting. For me, my interests lie in non-fiction literature, and I have many colleagues who share those interests, and so I often fi

I have taken Zing for a spin on 24 c3.8xl ec2 instances running Elasticsearch with 32G heaps and just under 2 billion indexed documents with millions of updates/day. The results are considerably better. If I just went up to 30 or even

Nix has a tool called nix-ops that will provision vms on virtual box (you can use containers powered by libvirt as well if you want). It's cool because you can use functional programming concepts and it takes a lot of the support heada

The author briefly touches on schemas. Anyone have experience or recommendations working with clojure.spec? If I were using Clojure with a schema less database, would I stand to gain anything significant?

Sorry, but this is naive and bad advice. Rate limiting is a critically missing component in many service APIs, for more reasons than I can even comprehensively enumerate off the top of my head. Scaling an API of any real value is NOT trivia

There is a convenient reindex API available in more recent versions, although in most cases where you can rebuild your index anyway, it's faster to do that.

I'm the father of 2, ages 3 and 2. My wife is due with number 3 in May. My son (3) was diagnosed about 18 months ago with level 3 ASD. I have a beautiful family that I adore. I'm a software engineer, and I was just promoted a coup

This is interesting. I never thought of using vim commands to power the browser, but I do love text interfaces. (I type 150 wpm's and find keyboard navigation markedly faster than the point-and-click interface -- especially since key

This article is about math. In my ignorance, I mistook the article to be about the monitoring project[1] -- I expected some kind of proof/theorem behind the monitoring project. This article is not about the monitoring project. [1]: ht

While I share your sentiment, don't forget that there is a very large pool of prospective employees who may be beneficial to a company in spite of a more narrow skill set, even if they don't grow their skill set. Take college grad

Thanks for clarifying. I agree with you, mostly. This is exactly the reason why I refuse to use Lombok. It literally mutates your bytecode! That's a disaster waiting to happen, and a potential debugging nightmare. I think that there is

I've worked a lot with this pattern in Python (Flask), Java and Scala. I have found it a little inconvenient beyond the simple hello world app when dealing with Flask, but I haven't encountered this problem with Java/Scala. T

SWF is awesome, but it can feel very abstract for most use-cases. In light of this, one of my good colleagues wrote a library called Super Simple Worfklow. It provides the level of simplicity that one would have expected from SWF to begin w
