I have rules for this after about a billion years of experiencing it. 1. minimize dependencies - batteries included is best unless it will take forever to write, keeping a local copy (like Linus' idea of static linking) is next best -

Wrong question IMO. We're shaped by evolutionary pressures from situations that no longer pertain, so it's not surprising we are not optimized for a world that just sprang into existence. My question is: Why is reality (especially

right, "observer" essentially means "interact with in any way that exchanges information, in the quantum sense of the word information" Still though, the fact that some states remain indeterminate until that interaction

This. I don't publish code I think is useful. I realize that's contrary to the open source ethos, and that many people would consider it hypocritical that I would then use open source without compunction - but I view open sourcing

Yes, that's true. I've actually been part of 3 published games, all in C++ -- all written with the ethos I mention above (POD classes and basically write like it's the year 2003). Bitcoin is the same way, written in C++ -- u

If I'm writing C++, I am doing it because I need nanosecond latency (and the delicious language libraries). If I only need microsecond latency, I would use Golang. If millisecond is fine, it'd be Python in a hot minute. If I only

When developers see ops as IT for them, it's because ops (and overall management) is doing a poor job laying out the actual responsibilities of each role in the org.

You should first ask yourself what you really enjoy. I happen to enjoy reliability, scaling up systems, etc. So I go after those kinds of projects. The things you really enjoy, you'll bring infectious enthusiasm to, and that's the
