In my experience, the Ruby culture doesn't prize cleverness over consistency. Instead, it leaves responsibility up to the developer. You can do convoluted things like 7, 8, and 15, but you don't have to (and few people do). Really, any lang

Am I missing something? Who's dragging down the male and female expectations? "Five years after graduation, [MBA grads] expect to be bringing in $180,031 annually vs. $169,849 the previous year. Male graduates expect to be raking in even mo

$100/gallon gas would do a lot more than slow down commuting. It would make air travel prohibitively expensive (thousands or tens of thousands to fly anywhere - fuel is already the biggest cost at any airline with $100/barrel oil). Shipping

I don't personally feel any pain by having these in different places. If other people do, then you might be on to something, but otherwise, why not focus on a piece that isn't done well elsewhere, rather than replicating common things (job

Don't forget angel investors. Not easy to get, but then again neither is venture funding. You can often raise enough for a YC-style startup - I know an entrepreneur who raised over $4M from angels and no institutional funding. The upside of

Agreed. In the Twin Cities, Minnebar is by far the best tech/startup event of the year. We've met clients, business partners, and even our attorneys there.

Man - my first job out of college was $16/hour. That's what I get for majoring in philosophy.

Total taxes in the US on a $40K salary for a single person with no other income and no other deductions: about $4,200 (10.5%). The marginal tax rate is higher, of course, and state taxes will add a little, but not too much.

I've used http://pickydomains.com a few times. You pay $50 and provide information on what you're looking for (names you like, etc.). They brainstorm names. If they find one you like, they keep the money. Otherwise, they refund it. We use

Great event. Worth the plane ticket and hotel. Mix it up next year with a different slate of speakers and topics, and I'll be back.

Harvest is time tracking app, with invoicing, that I really like (not unlike Blinksale). I think it's the only subscription software that my business pays for. AFAIK it was started by two designers, and my guess is that they're doing well,
