I was thinking the same thing. It's a really good article - above the TechCruch norm. I especially liked #2 - "Where's the real money?" It's tempting to try to go from 0 to 100,000,000 in one go, but if you haven't penetrated a familiar mar

My wishlist: a Perl successor that takes the functional path, not the OO path (like Ruby). Also, one that plays well with either C/C++/Unix or the JVM, for deployment practicality. I think I want Lua + ML in one.

For the love of God, take your time. Absolutely. If you really want to learn, you'll do far better by apprenticing than by studying in the classroom. Check out Corey Haines ( http://www.coreyhaines.com/ ) for inspiration. Then, if you wan

Probably because 1.9 isn't completely backwards-compatible with 1.8. People were also upset by two things. First, some 1.9 features were backported into 1.8.7, meaning an upgrade from 1.8.6 to 1.8.7 was sometimes painful. Second is numberin

The best example of this is the Flynn Effect - IQs have dramatically risen over time. Either our ancestors were dullards, or the IQ test measures something other than innate intelligence. "If American children of 1932 could take an IQ test

Have you done much unit testing? Done right, writing unit tests often doesn't take any extra time at all.

Summary: another post saying that "unit tests aren't a panacea". Which is true, of course. But that doesn't mean that unit testing isn't terribly useful.

RE Bach: to each their own. I find counterpoint to be really emotionally powerful, and I think that's the root of what grabs me in Bach.

I'm especially partial to three bits of classical music. 1. 20th century classical. I really love Shostakovich, Stravinksy, Bartok, and others who blended "classical" elements (18th and 19th centuries) with modern ideas. At its best, their

I hear what you're saying, but I'd personally rather work more quickly than experience my users' pain. Most of my users won't have a 24" monitor either, but it's worth every penny.

The redhillonrails core plugin keeps foreign key constraints in sync in schema.rb. No such luck for triggers or views. But no reason someone couldn't add that functionality.

This article assumes that "the public" is a homogeneous group. In reality, if you want to release a polished, useful app to "the public" (i.e. a median target user), you probably need to release early and often to early adopters first.

The author gave a great talk at Windy City Rails [1] on this topic. He talked about two domains - biology and comics - and showed how absurdly complex a SQL schema would be that modeled them rigorously. I hadn't really understood a practica

I'd really love to see someone make this portable to other unixes -- it'd be lovely to finally have good package management for the ~/mine/bin dirs I have on servers everywhere Amen. That could be hugely powerful.

That depends on the difficult of what they're developing. Boilerplate code? Two great programmers are a waste. Moderate difficulty? Maybe less efficient than working separately, but they'll still work a bit faster, produce fewer defects, tr

I think the common complaint is that that it isn't really Lisp all the way down - it's Lisp syntax that drives the JVM. Therefore, it is a False Lisp; it dresses like Lisp, and convinces the unwashed that it's Lisp, but it's actually leadin

Anecodotally, I've experienced this too. I fast from food from time to time, and whenever I do, I'm ready to sleep earlier at night and ready to get up earlier the next morning.
