Don't regret the good times for one second, but do get very jealous of people on HN talking about all the exciting tech they're using and awesome work environment. I am actively taking steps to move to a better company, but my god

Just sort of fell into it. Did an internship at university in $genericbigcorp and didn't bother looking for other/better jobs at graduation. (To be fair they paid a generous joining bonus - well £2000 "generous" to my br

How can I get into this field? I used to love doing pen-testing when I was a teenager, and paid for my first car out of bug-bounties. Unfortunately, I got distracted by girls and booze at university and didn't keep it up, now I work in

I'm a liberal/hacker/software-engineer - you know the type, even joined the Pirate Party years ago. But am I the only one that doesn't have a problem with this. The set of people that visit the dark web intersects with t

I just played against my housemate who used to be a junior-national level player, he did the same just replying 100% of my returns but not slamming them. I asked him to play 100% and he won every point first return or serve.

There is a subtle valid use-case. On "change your password" screens, you don't want the second "confirm password" field to be pastle-able to stop this scenario. 1) User tries to type "mypassword" but enter

Have you tried WinForms with touch screen devices? I haven't, but would guess it doesn't cope too well.

My father had a completely different experience. His ancient physics teacher said, "computers my boy...they are the future". This would have been some time in the 1970's. Of-course dad didn't listen and went on to have a

Isn't "the magic spells that you can use", exactly how we (programmers) use interfaces. I trust that the interface, be it the C++ standard, or boost::whatever, is well enough tested that I don't need to know "how it

Reminds me of the grind a professional poker player goes through. Every day, wake up, play poker for 10-15 hours, study for ~5 hours, sleep. There's a reason they call it the grind, and why there are very few overall winning players, d

Amsterdam. Love the people and the culture, the night-life is great (no, not that sort!), cycle everywhere - never stuck in traffic jams. Reasonably easy to fly back to visit family/friends in London. Downsides: Expensive, I can't
