Heh, I knew that Coca-cola didn't still have cocaine, but TIL it doesn't have Cola (nut) either! Its name is completely ridiculous now.

performance of Go - why not Fortran? type system of Kotlin - why not Scala/Haskell? Repl like Kotlin, why not Clojure?

I've been meaning to get back into that, but now I'm curious about lots of personal development paths?

I like this. I like crossword puzzles but don't like I'm just solving pre-made puzzles rather than exploring new territory. Math seems the best candidate but are there other fields with similar challenges?

* Hot deploy * Extreme thread-safety, better than all JVM languages and on par with the best. * Macros - Other languages you have to reach for other languages to program in other paradigms, for example rules, logic programming, or writing

Scala and Clojure were smart to ride the JVM early on. Babashka and Jank are Clojure breaking out of the JVM.

I think by the same reasoning Qwerty keyboard is better than Dvorak. People are just used to Qwerty, although they would type faster on Dvorak, or in the case of s-expressions use structural editing.

Yes. I agree with the problem statement, but have no idea what the solution is BUT it does involve lots of key bindings.

I'll try things I wouldn't otherwise try to get a better solution. I generate more throw-away code that actually gets thrown away, that's a win.

I was impressed with how well flutter took function/react style and married it with OO, the rendering seemed to make anything possible and clean. Dart is good, just the threading model seemed awkward. Can't say I dove too deep tho

Finding red blood cells in 70 million year old bones. Still find that incomprehensible. Not sure King George didn't kill a dinosaur.

Don't get me started on not CamelCasing acronyms, acronyms aren't more important than regular words! :)

Very good, I wrote Pascal many years ago, but I was thinking more Kotlin/Scala (right?) vs Java.

There's so many languages out there, I reject Raku out-of-hand simply since IMO the type should follow the variable name.

Renting a car is more of a pain these days. I find I actually have to learn how that car "likes its buttons". I don't remember having to look at a physical gear shifter to know it's in drive/reverse, etc. Now I have

Long-term maybe we won't care about code because AI will just maintain it itself. Before that day comes, don't you want a coding language that isn't opinionated, but rather able to describe the problem at hand in the most und

I find it annoying in Java when uppercase is used because its an acronym. URL or UUID. No man, just Url/Uuid. No need to yell just because its an acronym.

My OO projects were usually in Java with a DB. They all ran afoul of what Martin Fowler calls the Anemic Domain Model. Basically your objects are data-only, so there's no benefit. In addition Spring injection became ubiquitous, and fur

Java didn't exist when I originally wrote C++ code. When it did come around it was easily 4x improvement for a good amount of development (eg. enterprise software). I think you need like 4x+ to be worth switching, and I don't see

They wouldn't want even the appearance of it being an Apple product running crap on it. If there was some way to completely distance themselves from it, maybe, but pretty much a non-starter.
