My point does seem obvious after re-reading. What I really wanted to imply is that the current startup system basically penalizes experienced people. Is that a good thing? Is it even possible to change that?

Yes. But I guess my point is that you can't compensate for the opp cost with equity, because the reward is binary.

I don't know how you can find a good hacker, because there is no way for you to judge one. That aside, your best bet is to offer a lot of equity in the startup. More than half of the company. Your biggest selling point is that you will t

Hopefully one day we will find our silver bullet. With the number of languages/platforms getting touted these days, we are certainly looking hard for it :)

Kill the company/project/idea. If you really like the idea, start fresh with new code, new names, etc etc. Your company is way to young to be having this type of problem. It will only get worse.

I think teacher recommendations follow a similar trap. Which people get the best rec letters? The ones who ask for help all the time (and get lots of face time). If you understand the material, what are you supposed to do - waste the tea

Rolled my own framework with mod_python. I am sick of reading docs to figure something out. Also, the bugs in my framework code are easy to fix compared to those found in the 'real' code. I don't think the cost of a home grown framework

I think this argument can be generalized. There are no real laws. Only consequences. You can do whatever you want. Some actions will cause the cops to throw you in jail, some wont. Timing is everything - what is illegal today might be

I don't really see how you can improve upon yc news with a new reddit clone. The community here is like minded with its startup interest. Here is what would be nice: more yc news like sites for all my other interests.

A smart company would give 6% equity to YC just for the advice and publicity. The cash is the least valuable part of the equation. 5k per person can be saved up in a number of months, even for relatively low salaries if you are stingy.

A place for people to share information about web hosting vendors would be very useful. For many hackers, this is the only fiscal expense on route to a first version.
