Great example of why client side software is more exacting (and frightening) than building for the web. I wish I had more of these tales as ammo for future "native vs mobile web" debates.

I agree. I was almost going to make a similar argument a few days ago, but ultimately decided not to because the masses have effectively redefined what that term means. At this point, "Ponzi Scheme" has become a general term for financial

The Ponzi moniker is somewhat relevant in the sense that existing investors (angels and VCs) could cash out to the next series of investors (public market) before the company turns a profit.

I'd find the operating loss slightly disturbing, because it means they are relying on repeat business down the road in order to crank out profit. Not saying they are going to bomb, but as an investor I'd be more bullish if they could expan

It's a marquee founder trying to explore how to better involve technology in the restaurant industry. Not nearly as bizarre as the press apparently loves to paint it. This is borderline link bait.

Amazingly, it sounds a lot like a successful startup: 10 million in funding, 141 million exit. However, startups usually have to deal with a high probability of failure, while YC achieved this with a substantially lower risk (portfolio the

I detect sarcasm, and I agree to the extent that the public debate on this matter is sorely lacking any analysis of why the laws in question exist. Both sides of the argument seem guilty of this.

True - but a sales office is all they have to add. There's no shipping of inventory that Apple or Honda have to deal with.

What Zynga, Facebook, LinkedIn, Groupon (and other current hits) have in common is that they have found a way to serve customers all around the world. How many business can really do that? It's easy to underestimate them because we forget

If you're looking for a scandal, how about the apparent gross underpricing of the stock by linkedin's investment bank? Isn't the reason companies hire these "experts" is that they have a good idea what price people will pay for your stock?

MS has had its own video conferencing via MSN messenger for years. I don't see the value of spending 8.5 billion in order to get Skype's tech - I would think that money would be better spent on a very fat pipe on which to run the live vide

Given the recent trend of founders partially cashing out during larger rounds, there's a chance that the funding event alone could guarantee a million dollars (or something relatively close).

Why haven't they made a tool/framework for porting WebOS apps (non-native) to iOS & android? This would be a great way to leverage their superior developer experience to get more apps on their platform.

The interesting bit is that $9 million is a normal amount for one company's series B round. In this case, that money is going to (in theory) benefit 60 companies. That is a big change that could have a significant impact.

Wine appreciation depends on your experience. If you haven't been exposed to the higher end, you won't miss it and should be perfectly happy with everyday brands (like Charles Shaw). The more exploring you do, however, the more you'll app

Is insider trading a form of wealth confiscation? The only way banks and hedge funds can be as successful as they are is via insider trading - not in the legal sense, but in the sense that they have info that the public does not. I don't

The investors are looking at this the wrong way. If buying employee equity doesn't seem like taking candy from a baby, then perhaps they should not be investing in the deal to begin with. I'd gladly buy shares in Groupon if the price look

This post reminds me of Paul Buchheit's definition of startup advice: Limited Life Experience + Overgeneralization = ADVICE The argument posed by the author looks good so long as he selectively chooses his examples (dropbox in this case).
