A sacrifice is worth it assuming it provides some benefit to the cause. I'm not sure if this action is going to have any effect (hopefully I'm wrong though).

As much as I support the anti SOPA cause, is this more of a hunger strike than a consequential action? The startups presenting at demo day need those dollars a whole lot more than the corporate venture arms need the investments. Money is

One phrase I associate with startups is "dumb enough to try". Startups usually have to break rules, and the most reliable way to pull that off is to not know you're breaking rules (i.e. youth). It's not a death sentence for older entrepren

One assumption being made here is that hiring is a critical task. It's entirely possible that a company can achieve its objectives without hiring; if that's the case then the argument doesn't apply.

The obvious (and fun) solution is to force these private equity markets to operate EXCLUSIVELY inside casinos. This would be the best way to get the masses to understand the realities of angel investing.

The trick is to use a prototyping-friendly paradigm, and mentally write it off as a research project.

One problem with OOP is that it's highly dependent on getting it right. If your design is correct, that's great, but otherwise you end up in increasingly hot water. The problem I have with OOP for new projects is that it's hard to see the

I think you need to replace "pick a problem" with "pick a good problem". The distinction between those two phrases is a big part of the start up game, IMO.

Ultimately, whoever writes the checks gets to decide what to strive for. If you can afford to hire a developer for each platform, great. Otherwise HTML5 is a compelling alternative.

I agree wholeheartedly with this concept. I previously used the term "instincts", but I think "judgement" is better. A solution is more than a technical implementation: it should address the actual requirements of the product as well as t

I doubt every ramen profitable startup founder is aware of this distinction, so it's still probably a point worth making.

I don't find it offputting; I think it's expected: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs

What's also sad is that those very entrepreneurs are sometimes right (youtube, skype). It makes it harder to be critical of that strategy.

If people relied on data driven approaches, I don't think there would be any startups. The expected return of a startup is a massive time expenditure combined with very little cash reward.

Contracts aside, what is the normal expectation regrading how long founders & employees of the start up remain with the acquiring company?

Maybe I'm just not used to it, but I honestly find it harder to write code when I'm well dressed. I really don't know why this is the case. Perhaps my subconscious thinks I'm performing physical labor when I code, and thus being well dres

I bet a lot of companies would pay on behalf of their employees. That would be cheaper than chartering an entire shuttle.

Is storage furniture the best niche for this? I wouldn't know, since I'm not in the market for that, but I don't think the pain of comparison shopping in that subset is particularly high (I could be wrong of course). Another slight foible

An open ended question I've wanted to ask for a while: when a startup (all of a sudden) needs to hire a bunch of engineers, what kind of things do those engineers work on? What requirements change so rapidly that doubling headcount becomes

Agreed, there could be more direct evidence. They are assuming that this correlation will hold true in most cities. Perhaps a less contested statement would be: "How Uber makes prostitution and alcohol better"...

Uber is able to decrease the average wait time by strategically placing cars wherever alcohol and prostitution are prevalent, thus making the service better.

It would be great if someone started an incubator devoted to single founders, specifically tailoring the program to address some of the associated shortcomings. Perhaps it could also be a fertile ground to merge any compatible founders int
