We’ve already got a “Value of Statistical Life” in the US, and it’s higher than that. So you could justify lockdown on that alone EPA recommends that the central estimate of $7.4 million ($2006), updated to the year of the analysis, be use

Those are world rates, not US rates. In the US, it’s largely the things I listed.

As you said, you gotta die of something. If the covid rate equals the regular rate, then the US death rate would effectively double if we simply did nothing. That’s assuming no second order effects like a shortage of medical care making th

So if all of America (330 million) gets infected, and we’ve got a 1% fatality rate, that means deaths (3.3 million) would be up there with all the other things that kill us combined!

The things that generally kill Americans (heart disease, cancer, car crashes, diabetes, etc) aren’t contagious, so this is a bad analogy.

I knew a guy who had a very common email address (like jsmith at popular provider), and it was pretty common for people to sign up to services using that address. For well designed sites that require verification before the account is setu

Yes, this feature is not available in a standard Windows installation for a number of reasons. You’ll need to use some kind of 3rd party tool to configure and maintain such a setup

No, you can’t do that, because Windows allows you to share on a local network, but not the entire world. And sharing that drive on the open internet would be a really, really bad idea.

Chicken pox was a steady state. It sucked that kids got it, but their parents and most adults were likely immune, so when they brought it home from school, it didn’t spread to parents. But if you expose kids to COVID now, they will in turn

If you’ve got a copy of my resume, even if you remove my name/email/phone number, I feel like it would be pretty easy to figure out who I am. Especially, if people have interesting or unique work experience. Say they founded a st

I still think GoodReads would have issues there. The first thing Goodreads asks you to do when you create a new account is to list and rate a bunch of books you've read and either liked or hated. This is important, because they (osten

That doesn’t solve the problem because the idea here is that some laws should sunset, some shouldn’t. When a civil rights law sunsets, lots of bad can happen in a short period of time. I’m using the example of the government unable to agree

This assumes you don’t have gridlock in the House/Senate, so it’s a bad idea. We already have govt shutdowns when we can’t pass a budget, imagine if a law that legalized gay marriage was allowed to expire, or one that granted people he

Right, but the government offered to cover his deductible. Any money he got from the government over and above the deductible he'd likely have to pay back to his insurance company, wouldn't he? You can't double dip like that

Does homeowners insurance cover the loss? What exactly is he suing for? Wouldn't the insurance company be the one who would want to sue here, in an attempt to get back some of their outlay?

Not necessarily better for the developers. If you don't have any recruiters or jobs I'm interested in, its a lot of work to create a profile and no benefit. In fact, it could just create a bunch spam for shady, underpaying gigs.

It’s likely an owner-occupied mortgage rate. Mortgage rates are lower for properties you live in vs ones you want to rent out (seen as higher risk).

Even if it wasn’t the initial goal of the company, it certainly would be a potential path forward, if the SaaS offerings ended up being unprofitable and the company was winding down. It’s a very real risk of using the service.

That doesn’t answer the question at all. What’s stopping a big IP firm from buying your company for the database of license violations?

I don’t see that as against your business model at all. You could build up a large database of say, violations of Oracle licenses, then get Oracle to buy out your company. You’d make a quick buck, and your users would be left holding the ba

Step One: Get low level developers to upload evidence of major corporate license violations to your server. Step Two: Sell evidence to legal firms. Step Three: Profit. This seems very risky from a company perspective.
