I've been involved for a long time, and it sure doesn't seem that way to me. Lots of that "code bloat" is simply making things portable across compilers, interpreters, operating systems and languages.

I like to take an interest in what other folks of a similar mind are involved in, even outside of programming/computers. There are more than a few (semi)well-known programmers who are actually involved in or otherwise support the VHEMT

AFAIK nginx doesn't yet implement server push for either SPDY or HTTP/2 (at least in the open source version).

The main feature I'm missing from DDG is the ability to filter results by date. I end up going to google often without it.

editing the hosts file requires admin privileges doesn't it? Doing it in the browser means it works for everybody that can launch arbitrary executables.

that's certainly what i get out of so many comment threads on this site and similar ones. Self-centered world view hits the nail on the head.

Been using Linux since 1998. GNOME 3 and GNOME Shell have been my favorite DE since then.

As a male.. all that "good natured ribbing" really made my life a lot more terrible. Once i finally got new friends who didn't do that, then things went a lot better. I was finally able to be myself.

I've watched many applications hold up adding new features that require newer dependencies that don't exist in debian stable and RHEL. So I'm in favor of some sort of solution that keeps the base nice and stable, but still al

agreed! so many folks see all that stuff as "bloat". In many cases, that code is there for a reason.

i was pretty happy with the way gentoo had slotted installs. It's a big help, but it's still just a bandaid.

you forgot that they are stuck dealing with the systems already in place. Do you expect Redhat and Debian to give up rpms and debs?

I assume they didn't mention nix for the simple reason that RedHat and Debian and other distros aren't going to give up their own packaging setup. So the only way forward is to work with what you have.

it's a service that isn't enabled by default, nor is it often even installed by default. I've found it useful though to use the gateway service to create a nice interface to browse the journal on local web app.

I'd love to get actual stats of "so many". It's probably less than %1 of all the GNU/Linux userbase. I wouldn't mind being proven wrong though.

These scripts will likely work on Windows, while shell scripts won't. Not everybody uses MacOSX or Linux to dev on. I have enough trouble dealing with folks who do Mac only stuff (as a Linux user) to not be sensitive to those concerns.
