What's your usage model? Lots of files, long tail? Very few files but very popular? Are the files really large (videos) or medium (images) or small (text)? How much are you willing to spend? Do you care about latency or just throughput

I did say to use SSL in practice, right? Reading about SRP would help solve much of confusion people seem to be having in many of the discussions going on in this thread.

In practical terms, just use HTTPS with rooted certs. It's not expensive for basic usage. And, if you're just doing a for-fun project you can always use self-signed certs. If you want to go deeper down the rabbit hole check out SRP: http:/

Re: verification Your comment is only arguably true for completely statically compiled languages which have very weak (or no) processing model that can be enforced (by e.g., the loaders).

Huh? You need to get out more. Also, note that the majority of the optimizations that e.g., HotSpot does are as applicable to "dynamic" languages as they are to "static" languages.

The quick and dirty approaches are to write a simple interpreter or a simple source to source compiler to another language which (has tools, etc.) which handle the heavy lifting of the backend. For example, look at all of the languages bu

There's already lots of different types of "database systems" floating around. Map/Reduce approaches to large-scale data processing has been getting most of the hype in the F/OSS space and columnar approaches in the enterprise spaces. An a

Where did you get that ridiculous notion? There's a serious problem with how people learning languages... their exposure to their first language has a strong tendency to color their thinking (read: biases) towards/against other languages fo

Indeed. That's why I'm totally an advocate for a requirement for a concurrent track that's all about installing/configuring/administration of computers/networks with an automation (i.e., shell scripting, tool development, etc.) focus.
