Thanks for the support. MarkMail is indeed built on top of the MarkLogic native XML database and it works very well. If anyone is interested, I already wrote up a bunch of my reactions to the article (good and bad) in tweets.

The v1.4.x series is stable but little except bug fixes because work is nominally focused on... The v1.5.x is more or less a rewrite that has languished for a couple of years with little progress.

Better to use e.g., vertical or left-justified labeling and use the in-field support to put in example values.

Yeah, the aristocratic, "geek machismo" model of hiring conflates (weak) correlation with causation. For me it's an anti-pattern that shows that such people lack a critical bit of intelligence and vision. It's also a modern example of the M

This is an expression of it, certainly... Facebook, to users, had a very clear idea of what it was but Facebook the company doesn't know who it is and keeps trying to force changes.

I love how Atwood's piece (let alone many of the comments) is directly an example of what he's talking about. I.e., while's many of his points are true they miss a much more critical point... When it comes to security all discussion must st

Not just online... It leads to dishonest, non-candid discussion. "Better" to attack with ad hominem; wild; fallacy filled; etc. "arguments" than to show any human authenticity.

Everybody who wants a cut of the business -- that's the whole point. Right now, the carriers have too much control and that doesn't serve the customers. Think of it like iTunes for phones: There's lots of music companies but customers reall

Apple should make MobileMe the Apple mobile phone service and just front all of the wireless carriers around the world. That's what users really want in terms of one-stop shopping and service.

Any reliance on that service for life-critical things is clearly delusion, incompetence, and downright frightening.

If you want to sleep better, cut out caffeine after noon. It's got a much longer half-life than you think. Also, rather than forcing yourself to try to sleep at a certain time, create consistency in when you wake up.

The "test first" extreministas write a test, write code to make that test pass, make it green, then commit. Lather, rinse, repeat. So the window for loss is exactly the work done for one small step of improvement. I concur that it's nices

No, you brought that (green threads implication) into the discussion. My whole point is that you're making an implication based on that distinction and that's just not true. Both Erlang and the JVM have to map lots of actors to a number of

You seem to be implying that one needs e.g., "green threads" to support huge numbers of "actors". That implication is false. Also, the only way that Erlang can support running on multiple actual hardware cores is, just as in Java "actor" i

Um, no. Even discounting specialized hardware+VM solutions like Azul, the regular JVM runs fine on shipping hardware that has lots of cores. The dominating limiter in practice is actually garbage collection. I.e., very large heaps will driv

This isn't a complete solution but does handle a lot of cases that non-FP developers will write. Alas, even though there is TCO in MLVM, it doesn't look like that will get through the JCP in time to get into Java v7. :-(
