When I was a kid I remember my brother and I asking my dad a ton of questions about SG. We viewed them as this amazing awesome company that made cool looking towers and the fastest computers in the world.

That's how the UK works. But making it that expensive to sue someone means it's harder to file meritorious or important cases too.

As a lawyer who has worked in and for big tech, we don't win 99% of the time. Far less. There are very well financed players and structural incentive that allow plaintiffs lawyers to win and take lots of money from big tech in the US.

in my professional experience it's hard to exactly comply with the cookie laws of Europe when using recaptcha. that doesn't mean it's a "nightmare" imo - it just means it's on par with a lot of online services.

You're saying the left is just straight up nicer than the right? This seems like kind of a weak take.

This was funny and I meant to update it but instead down voted it and now can't find how to undo that. Sorry!

Honestly these prosecutions are really just driven by the media. They just are. The fact that sam was young and had a poluamorous house in the Bahamas meant this was front page material. This then meant that prosecutors feel they must do so

One different with UK is they use the 'English Rule' of fee-shifting. In English civil lawsuits, the losing party has to pay the attorneys fees of the other party. In the US, there's basically no downside of suing someone if

Exactly. Yes. That's the idea. The US legal system relies more on "ex post" legal enforcement - meaning, if you break the law then you get busted and you personally pay the victim. Europe is a more "ex ante" system

Thanks for the fact check. I'm writing on my phone so I can't do this justice, but the operative wording of the Sherman Act (or its followup the Clayton Act) is something like: "unfair restraint on trade is unlawful," or

The common way people think about common law versus civil law is this: -common law depends more on courts to make and refine legal decisions -civil law relies more on regulators. In civil law countries it's more common for the statute

Been thinking about it, but our industry is a service industry and we prefer to get paid to offer our expertise. If I go out on my own and find myself lacking clients, I might.

Just spitballing but it seems a unique aspect of a human driver is their fear for loss of life. We're all subtly terrified we are about to die and that keeps us sharp and responsive and thoughtful while driving.
