My interpretation of a similar scenario (my girlfriend and I both followed & listened to each other's Discover Weekly) was that Spotify noticed that traffic and started assuming our tastes were converging (they were).

> If you buy Intel, you know beforehand you won't be able to upgrade the CPU, since the socket is changed (intentionally, of course) every generation. But the CPU isn't the issue for e.g. gaming, and upgrading every generation

Fascinating read, even though I'm no compiler nerd. Explains some of the significance of vector extensions and support for them in surprisingly approachable language. And as others have mentioned, the glimpse of internal Intel politics

This is an interesting article hampered by a tenuously related clickbait title. Please change it.

Definitely has been on HN before. Cool read though, once again.

Years ago, my father was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and given a 55% chance of surviving six months. The immediacy pushed him and my mother into writing out the book they'd been thinking about for years, a book on manhood for their

Not too surprising. Definitely happened to me on the summit of a 14er in the Colorado Rockies last year. I was glad I had my DSLR as well as my iPhone 7...the Canon had no problems (it was only about 30F).

Definitely. I find myself using Waze primarily for that sort of hotspot detection, when I know all/almost all potential routes, but want to know how bad the best/worst case travel times are. If Waze reroutes me onto surface street

I'd be more inclined to believe 'hoax' if that's what the chip contacts said. But a 'refuse to confirm'? No telling.

Triangle resident here, and we don't have anywhere near the density to actually make general-purpose light rail work, economically. That said, I do think we're somewhat competitive for this, even though I don't want to see Am

Me too. Measured in lines of code output, my optimal distribution of interaction probably looks like a Laffer curve. Too little and I distract myself often, too much and I spend all my time interacting and not much on code. Put me on a job

Also from the P0 blog post: Variant 1: bounds check bypass (CVE-2017-5753) Variant 2: branch target injection (CVE-2017-5715) Variant 3: rogue data cache load (CVE-2017-5754) My checking doesn't show any of those three explicitly liste

I do contract design as well and for some things there really is no competitor. I haven't heard of anybody seriously competing with InDesign since Quark XPress became not-a-thing-anymore.

Seriously? Some of their apps are rock-solid professional apps with good UX and (occasionally) no serious competitors. InDesign alone is a huge win.

A primary reason for this is that ALDI products (at least here in the US, I don't remember whether this was true shopping in Europe a few years ago) typically have 4-6 barcodes per package--a box will often have a bar code on every fac

DISTINCT ON if I recall correctly is a Postgres-specific extension, and is rather like a shortcut to an OVER WINDOW query selecting where RANK() = 1. And I love it, but I wouldn't be expecting it to show up in MSSQL.

I was trained as a developer under some of those early masters in Agile/XP. Including frequent references to that wiki. I sure hope we can reconstruct it and get it back online as soon as possible!

My father's comment, upon reading the article: "And if they had a barge lent by a friend, they could tie their cables fore and aft and gird her all around ... and hit the air and then take up the strain ... etc."
