other poster described clamping with is right. But yep, any 256-bit string is good.

2^255 - 19, describes the finite field over which the elliptic curve is defined. The "keyspace" in the sense of valid public keys is really defined by the order of the curves generator, G, which in this case is approximately 2^252

It's 2^255 - 19, not 255^19.

“Crap” I daily drive 3 Linux devices and 2 macOS. macOS isn’t close to crap. It’s better than Linux in some contexts and worse in others. Overall about par.

I think the author is confused about the goals of “web 3”.

It’s funny that you’re a proponent of NIST/FIPS approved crypto but also worry about NSA backdoors.

I find the way you target certain users bizarre. Many comments violate the strict code of conduct and go unchecked.

Some are, Monero for example. I’m not here to shill. But defi and private digital money have value. Increasingly so when you look at government incompetence globally.

Private, self sovereign money for the internet. I think that’s a use case.

actually its "number of wallets with balance"/2^160. You don't need to find a specific private key, anyone will do that yields a public key that hashes to the BTC address.

You could shorten that by recognising the address space is more like 2^160 in BTC, due to the address generation process, more than one private key can spend from a given address, technically.

Hey John - I came here to ask the same question. How is that possible. Same happened to me. >> leads to the "end" page, it's not as I though a "big jump" from some random page... thus I suspect it's simpl

Currently 12.1 has this issue though.

Still an issue in latest 12.1 beta. Really frustrating. Just dropped a chunk of change on an M1 Pro too.

On what basis do you think that the ECDLP will be solved in polynomial time in a classical context? I would expect we will more likely have an error-correcting quantum machine sooner than the aforementioned. Given the pace Google et al are

It would reduce the output space of a cryptographic hash by its square root. That would help speed up attacks would it not?

How is this on the front page of Hacker News.

Hacker news is holistically anti cryptocurrency. Which disappoints me. It has virtues. As someone who works in applied Cryptography and has also worked for the European Central Bank, we need “crypto”. 1) seigniorage is an abused privilege.

The contention that iMessage doesn't do a "space save" mode on device is wrong. I have 75GB of messages in iCloud, I see 25GB on my 500GB Mac and 11GB on my 64GB iPhone.

I work in applied Cryptography so I’m well placed to judge. Other than Monero and ZEC (the latter of which has some issues for me which I posted about before) Grin is the only other project that isn’t a clone.

Monero. It’s provided a private money for the internet. That helps people. It’s valuable. A permissionless, censorshipless decentralised private money.
