I used to think that was pretty cool, until I realized it was probably developed well after Haskell. :) It can be of help if you're passing a lot of input to system() etc; it's not really general enough to help with web programming. I gave

I never got into using mh, but have experienced a similar inversion when I switched to mpd, where what was a monolithic interface for playing music was replaced with a broad set of tools that center around the command line. It's exhilaratin

Configure your shell to report nonzero exit statuses. joey@gnu:~>true joey@gnu:~>false zsh: exit 1 In zsh this is done by "setopt print_exit_value". It's a pity shells don't do it by default.

How amusing that the date at the top is 1999-10-11, itself ambiguous. I like the "scientific time"/"political time" wording, snarf. By the way, I've noticed that while 200x was used most places for a while, it's becoming increasingly common

In multiple languages (perl, haskell), I find myself writing a function that runs a system command and returns False (or sometimes, throws an exception) if it failed nonzero. Also, in haskell I use these frequently to have monadic versions

One thing about those old windows 95 floppies is that they have surprisingly better quality than other floppies. I had to use some floppies in 2001, and had massive failure rates with newly bought ones, and near-zero with rewritten Windows

IMHO the shadiest side of the bitcoin daemon is that it discovers peers by connecting to an irc channel. Just like a typical virus botnet handles command and control. Connecting these two uses of IRC is pretty obvious, and then you get a vi
