I'm still using my Mac Pro from 2008! Upgraded the memory and video card. The colors on the display are completely wonky in the past year so it's being regulated to a plex server. I'm probably paying way too much in energy.

you can drop down to sql using activerecord, so there's not much advantage to using pgtap (other than possibly speed, since you don't have the overhead of arel and serializing objects into ruby)

This is the main reason for me. I have to be able to quickly search data that's stored in a couple different tables. Using an index means the read queries become a little more complex (they have to exactly match the index expression).

Doing SOA in Ruby isn't so bad. Nice thing about services is that you can keep the the total lines of code low in each service. Ruby is better when you don't have giant apps.

What happens with the authorization to the credit card processor times out? You don't know if it succeeded or not. You have to have a way to ask the credit card processor for "did this charge succeed?" and then process the

The advantage of this is that you can pass the relational dataset that's a result of this code around to other methods. Those methods can add additional filters, different ordering, etc. You can't do that with raw sql strings.

You can disable all triggers in a session. set session_replication_role='replica'; If memory serves me correctly. Foreign keys are maintained by triggers.
