Lots of people will argue against the GPL on philosophical grounds alone. I'm going to argue against it based on its ambiguity. Just reading this thread illustrates the problem clearly. In the old days of simple, standalone applications a

They are beautiful, especially compared to the built-in dashboard UIs. If you're looking for yet another piece of infrastructure code to give away for free, I'd love to see it open-sourced.

I absolutely love tmux and use it everyday, but the killer feature I really want is tighter integration with a terminal emulator like iterm2. I would love to be able to attach to a tmux session with iterm2 and scroll using two-finger scrol

Suppose you make $100k as a salaried developer, which works out to about $50/hr. What would be an appropriate, approximately equivalent rate to charge as a consultant? Edit: For an American at least. I guess what I am more curious about i

One minor bug: I notice the anchor (and results!) changing as I type and backspace, but if I backspace all the way to an empty it is stuck on the single-letter anchor. Would be nice if it cleared out entirely and took me back to the empty

CountEveryBitByHand() is a function which returns a promise. (I don't know if that's what they call it in C# 5.) The await keyword is a new one in C# 5 which halts execution until the promise is fulfilled. Then execution is resumed from t

One of things I like about github is that it's done a great job of enticing developers to write good README files. I've seen many projects that do a fine job of introducing the project, listing things like license, dependencies, etc., and

A coworker introduced me to Requests a couple of weeks ago. It makes life a whole lot easier. It does highlight my biggest gripe about Python, though. I love the language, but the class library is hit-and-miss, and anything to do with HTT

I like the idea, but is anyone else worried about the user interface? I don't like the thought of any site I happen to drive by registering their ability to handle intents. When it does become time for me to edit a photo, I don't want 50

Another important difference thus far unmentioned is that IE is a browser for a single platform, and Microsoft traditionally has not done a good job in creating IE features in a cross-platform way. (I'm thinking of ActiveX specifically her

I disagree, and I think Mono is stronger now with a startup behind it. With Novell you only had the perception of some cushion. Novell laid off the entire engineering staff behind Mono, including Miguel. If he had simply walked away from

Looks to me like everybody wins. Xamarin gets IP -- meaning they don't have to do a clean-room, source-compatible reimplementation of MonoTouch and Mono for Android, and all the risks that go with that -- in exchange for taking on the suppo

Unity uses Mono for scripting in their engine. As it runs on a variety of platforms where replacing the runtime (which is normally LGPL licensed) isn't possible, I believe they have a commercial licensing agreement in place with Novell. I

I'm not sure you can make this assumption. Attachmate seems most interested in cutting Novell down to the bone and extracting whatever value it can from what is left. I don't see a whole lot of future growth opportunity from that company
