"Bloom", "Trope" and "Air" will do this on iPhone. http://generativemusic.com/ Edit: oh, wait, you wanted beats... "Mujik" has an "auto-mujik" mode which will do this. http://www.luckyframe.co.uk/mujik/

it's a good trick but letting the compiler warn you is better (and of course always compiling warning-clean so you'll notice it). There's plenty of times where both sides are non-const and this trick won't save you when that happens.

Nice article. Emphasizes that the only way to know what's going on is to test and inspect the assembly. I tried it, and without any flags gcc used 'sqrtsd' (the sse version) for me. -msse was enabled by default.. So I'm not sure that what h

I'd sign up if there was a way to make a list of apps I want but think are too expensive, and then have it email me if there is a sale on any of those. Can it do this? I can't see myself checking the page everyday, i might as well check the

I posted an idea in this thread: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=848766 quoting myself: ''' Hey, this isn't my idea but I wish someone would do it. Only useful to programmers or web developers, but hey.. A little tray-app (or somethin

Nanowrimo (www.nanowrimo.org) is coming up. Try /writing/ a book, it will have a more profound influence on you than any reading could have. my recs: "Godel Escher Bach", as previously mentioned, and "The Fifth Head of Cerebus" by Gene Wolf

I agree with this guy's thinking... but it's going to be hard to find a good game developer who wants to switch to web stuff. Try and recruit people who've just had kids. That's why I switched from games to something less crunchy (not web,

I find IRC is great for general questions like these. people don't mind helping newbies and since it's so ephemeral you don't feel bad asking lots of beginner questions.

This is the wrong approach. Javascript is rapidly becoming the "bytecode" of browsers. Look at established projects like Haxe and GWT which take higher level languages and compile them down to low-level javascript. Pyjamas is even a python

If your goal is to get things done in the real world, Python is a great first choice. Learn C/C++ next. Don't listen to these scheme/functional wackos. It's great -- and once you've been programming for a few years you should definitely lea

I think you're on the right track. Start hanging out where programmers do. HN is a good start. Go to conferences for ruby/python/web-stuff and talk to people. Make friends, share your idea freely. Tinker. Try to build it yourself but don't

I ran a home server with dyndns, just used it for family stuff. The issues I had weren't with bandwidth but with upload speed (important for your app) and mostly with uptime, between regular home pc outages, dyndns snafus, and occasional ou
