This is no longer the case. No email data is used for any ad targeting. But yeah, similarly useful technology exists. I don't know if it's in use at all in order to fight abuse like this. Source: https://blog.google

My understanding is that you can't legally have any sort of explicit quota or scoring system, but that you can sort-of factor in race, ethnicity, or gender to meet diversity goals. Is this correct? And isn't it kind of inconsisten

Hard to say, since we don't know what such perfect play would look like. But I expect it would look quite boring, yes. It's important to state, though, that calling an engine's play "romantic" is not a value judgeme

From what I've read scattered across a few different chess discussion places, the consensus seems to be that a) yes, 1 GB is pretty small b) it would matter, but c) probably not enough to change the end result. I guess we will have to

Menial labor robots will come whether YC funds them or not, so they better work on UBI to prepare for that.

The difference is this is an entirely new paradigm of chess engine. So it's not just Stockfish getting an edge over Houdini that year or whatever. There is plenty of "they didn't give stockfish enough memory, the hardware isn

I hope they change the TCEC hardware specs to include GPU so this might be able to happen.

Data frames do work well. You are correct that it is mainly an abstraction on top of the existing spark RDD representation. The language is Scala, though a slightly strange string/macro-based sql-ish API. Perhaps you can tell from that

So this all hinges on a deleted story being removed from search results too quickly? Google crawls some sites (especially high-traffic news sites like Forbes) more frequently than others. And why should a deleted article still show up in se

My opinion of this changed after reading this comment by the developer: https://www.reddit.com/r/scala/comments/6ubuix/twitter_annou... Sounds like they are intending it as a research effort and hope to

I used to work at a big data consulting company and dealt with hadoop clusters at a bunch of different companies. What you described was absolutely the norm. The entire cluster closed to the outside world, except for one gateway machine tha

This will be HUGE for competitive Dota, even if they never take it further. In much the same ways top chess players have learned from engines, I have to think top Dota players will practice against and study the hell out of this bot if Open

Yeah this title makes it sound like they're afraid of consequences from Google. But it's actually because of being afraid of external attention, given the consistency of leaks on this whole thing.

It makes much more sense to postpone this until some of the media and public furor dies down. Regardless of which side you are on, it's not worth the risk of discussing it openly right now.

Yeah this is a bit worrying. But since it was leaked, this actually doesn't seem so bad. What incentive would the CIA have to lie internally?

The point about requirements to physically store data in a country seems especially silly. Instead of "if you operate in our country, you have to store that data in our country", why wouldn't it be "if you operate in our

Yeah a more accurate title in these cases is often something like "assumptions of theoretical law don't quite apply in this case or can be otherwise worked around in practice" but that doesn't get clicks. Another good se

I'm in Mountain View too. I agree it's pretty frustrating that this is supposedly the tech center of the universe, and our home internet is lousy. Five minutes from Google HQ and no Google Fiber for the forseeable future now. FWIW

This is exactly it. You want a directed tree for learning, whereas wikipedia is an undirected graph. Mathematics suffers the most since its tree is unusually deep, not wide.

Anonymity, especially with healthcare, is usually treated as a spectrum, with a (somewhat arbitrary) cutoff. For instance, let's say you want to study how much a variety of lifestyle factors influence some rare disease. Is the fact tha
