The ARM based HP-20B calculator is fully hackable, and HP has even released schematics and an SDK. Not a lot of non-volatile RAM, though. http://www.wiki4hp.com/

Hmm...maybe his definition of multithreaded doesn't match that commonly used in the emebdded world. Lots of embedded projects are written in C, many using an RTOS to allow multiple tasks/threads to run concurrently on a single CPU. Or for

Here's the original pickle experiment, as documented in the DEC Western Research Lab publication: http://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/Compaq-DEC/WRL-TN-13.pdf Worth a quick read. No mention of the short lifespan of current OLEDs, either.

I like to use macros (in C) to spit out the structure size and offsets of each structure member over a serial port, in a format I can then cut-n-paste back into the source. This output consists of a bunch of (compile-time, when possible) a

Of course it is possible! I've worked with several turnkey contract manufacturers in the US that would be happy to build 100 circuit boards. Some will even do PCB layout and help with circuit design. Mechanically, places like protomold a

The PDF certainly seems authentic to me. The language and technology seems correct for the period. I was surprised that some of the units were mixed standard/metric, such as "75-100 grams for each 10 gallons of gasoline".

Good point--I couldn't tell either. After I replied and questioned some of his comments in that thread, I began to wonder if I'd been trolled.

I would have thought the CFL ballast would run in the kHz range, not 50-60 Hz. The DMM appears to be reading voltage, and its input is probably pretty high impedance, so it may very well be sensitive to the hash from the ballast (the meter'

I look at it this way--I can usually get new OEM parts at less than what a shop would charge me for reman or knock-off parts, and any tools that I need end up costing less than the labor at shop rates. I end up spending less than I would a

Damn straight. If the project is small enough, you might even design the hardware and write all the code. Nowhere to hide and all the bugs (and glory) are yours.

There are some nice things about the filter in question. It's very memory efficient--you just need to keep an accumulator with the weighted sum of samples. You get an output with each input sample, so it's a good fit for continuous signal
