In a regular OS there would be a bunch of implicit things provided by the OS that the app can access, while in this OS those things are explicit in the context. But I don’t think that’s really that significant… you could, e.g., enumerate al

The key factor when de-duping some code is to know whether the code is the same because they express the same abstraction or due to coincidence . If they are the same abstraction then they should always be the same and you're doing

This is the Cory Doctorow sense of the word, is it not? (Or, now that I notice your username, maybe you’re making an ironic joke, since complaining about the misuse of the word enshitification is a meme now?)

I buy the need for something like FQL. But I don’t buy that this should be connected to a proprietary service. Or that the alternative query language should be a proprietary language. For something long-term or critical, it seems like a p

I just don't see how it's incumbent on Apple to implement a standard only because it exists. It takes significant resources and impacts release schedules to, say, support an on-going vulkan implementation... I think there would ne

Here’s the actual good advice: Build your system as a set of composable parts. The article doesn’t really quite get there, but is close. Almost everything else in there is wrong and should be ignored. Let’s see… *nix command line never did

I think the conventional way exceptions are implemented is pretty bad. First, a lot of languages make you use an awkward, unnecessary scope to catch an exception. e.g., you want to declare and initialize a variable to the value of a functio

Hang on, we're talking about user sessions and you're talking about access tokens. Short expiration of sessions is bad because of the terrible UX. Access tokens can be refreshed without user interaction, so it's not the same

Well, you're trading one problem -- apps need to include their own dependencies -- with a more thorny problem: everyone has to somehow have already installed your app's dependencies. Of course, they don't, so you bundle your

It's hard to see how that would have worked. Google can put anything it wants in Chrome, but why would Safari or Firefox have done this? I don't see how they even could from a practical perspective, since they'd each either h

With inline styles you can’t do media queries (e.g., so your site can look good on both phones and desktops) or pseudo selectors (e.g. :hover). Also, though it’s lower-level than something like bootstrap, it does have a design system. Boots

If you want to do this kind of thing, let authors opt-in (or publishers). Yes, it will take effort and probably go slow, but if the tool is really useful and amazing, it should be doable. I suspect the authors are put-off by a couple thin

This makes some sense for straight-up DDoS attacks. For bots/spam my intuition is this could not work. Computation is extremely cheap, and your average legit user is going to have a significantly lower threshold than your spammer.
