Totally agree. Something I find myself thinking/saying more and more is "don't underestimate what you can accomplish with a $5 VPS". Maybe a little hyperbolic, but computers are really fast these days. Elastic resources

I used RStudio to work through problem sets, textbooks, and ideas constantly during my time as an applied math student. My concentration was stats, but still found RStudio invaluable for pretty much every math class I took. I say RStudio sp

In the particular case of Instagram as GP mentions, I'm guessing the devs don't go off of user agent since curl's default user agent is "curl/<installed version num>". Even if they are going off user agen

That's what I'm thinking too. Why would Visa invest anything in crypto if they don't think they can reasonably control and benefit off it? Risk assessment is at the very core of Visa's company and I cannot imagine they w

Does anyone have experience using something like Obsidian as a sort of lab manual for software engineering? How do you structure your notes? What gets written down? I use Obsidian and the note of the day plugin which uses a template that ha

Genuinely asking - has Hacker News seen a good Substack submission? I've only seen low quality posts from that website posted here.

But poor people hate feeling like they have to change their appearance to get the approval of the privileged classes. Feeling like you have to visually and verbally code switch to get "better" people to respect you just feels bad.

I'm talking about the case where a person doesn't get to "choose" to act poor. The poor person doesn't get to choose to think other than what is affordable, where someone with more money gets the choice to thinking

I would also assume companies/banks hiring COBOL programmers are more interested in candidates with years of experience with the language, since opportunities to build and grow with COBOL seem pretty slim outside of legacy maintenance.

I've had better luck with fractional scaling on Windows over Linux. Can be hit or miss if any given Linux application will handle fractional scaling well, but the desktop environment (KDE Plasma on Ubuntu) does fine with it.
