How much is slow compilation caused by the compiler, and how much is it caused by the crates ecosystem and the many, many, many dependencies a project gains? I'm genuinely curious because a couple of projects I have written are not tha

Didn’t Minix support running without a MMU? And there seems to be an option to disable MMU support in Linux too. Obviously you lose on memory protection… but does that make these setups “not Unix”?

Hey folks. The excellent "FreeBSD on Firecraker" post from yesterday ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37253035 ) made me remember the pain I went through many years ago to make NetBSD Multiboot-compliant (aka

Reminds me of something I wrote a while back: https://jmmv.dev/2020/01/system-rewrites-and-tuning.html TLDR: when facing problems like these, it’s too easy to look at grandiose solutions and, because they look lik

I suppose there might be others, but I just wanted to mention http://pkgsrc.org/pkgsrcCon/ , a conference on the pkgsrc packaging system. This had been going on for years, but seems to have stopped in 2019 due to the pa

The only time I had one on my desk on a regular basis (outside of school / university work) is when I was coding in assembly. Converting between various numeric bases was what I used it most, and it beat using a calculator program.

I haven't tried Thunderbird in a while, but Windows Mail, Apple Mail, and even Evolution support OAuth, which takes you through the 2FA flow of, at least, GMail and Outlook.com.

This is so nice to see. Glad that FreeBSD is still alive after all these years. I guess I can share my story :) I played with some early versions of FreeBSD and OpenBSD but, at the time, I was still a Linux newbie so I wasn't comfortab

Bad memory. The idea that Windows Terminal was C# was in the back of my mind for some reason but I did not verify this fact. Thanks for keeping me honest; updated the text now. PowerToys is mostly C# though, which I have also verified now.
