The timing of the iPhone (its OS and its app store ecosystem) played a significant role in the check-in model, I think, as it encouraged developers to [finally] sidestep the carriers, and also prevented background processing. Though this is

I can see why Braintree would have no interest in businesses that are destined to maintain smallness, but they're missing out on getting into bed with some young companies whose payment volume will eventually pop. And leaving the door open

Right. But this could have happened at any point once Android became a legitimate competing platform, and that's where the argument loses steam for me.

A bookkeeper will want to eventually categorize all your receipts by type, so if you're losing detail by going paperless (or losing track of things altogether), you may need to rethink that.

There's bookkeeping and there's accounting. Some accountants will set you up with a bookkeeper to take care of the more menial and regular tasks and then coordinate when that bookkeeper (or not) when the time comes for more formal and "art

I've been helping out a friend's office recently and their books are a total mess. Some checks entered against invoices, some not, accounts receivable and accounts payable are totally unorganized, nothing reconciles... So here's a recommen

Sure. Though Jonathan Ive has gotten a fair amount of credit/exposure of the years, too, for the industrial design side of things.

Good stuff. Really like the artwork and the idea. I just dug out a bed in the back yard which is waiting to be planted, so I would seem to be your target customer. However, I'd be inclined more to use your free email reminder service and

Here's the site if anyone is curious about Farmscape: http://www.farmscapegardens.com/#home The cost saving argument is probably a stretch: "In many cases, installing a Farmscape garden in the place of an existing lawn can lower your mo

Jason would probably defend his manner as east coast shoots from the hip, no bullshit. But that's a joke. He's just rude and coasts have nothing to do with. Passion is a good thing, and Jason's passion here is warranted, but the guy needs a

I'm often amazed at how cavalierly advice like this is given. We're talking about a major (yes, major) decision here. And the logic... drop out of college because a handful of very smart entrepreneurs were able to start successful business

Soft lock in? I don't know... I guess I'm being a bit literal with the term "lock." It's not binary (literally handcuffed or not), but more of a continuum taking into account the cost of moving away. So sure, I guess I missed that. And t

Accountable to users is a HUGE point. What happens to a site when users feel alienated or violated or whatever? Those users begin to walk away towards an emergent alternative. The facebook "lock in" isn't a lock in at all. It's more like

I don't know if I'd call it "artificial" exactly, but last time I checked, Posterous was limited by how big of an email you can send (gmail limits to 20 or 25 mb, I think). Have they opened up on-site uploads yet?

Right. I suppose Sachin has to say that Posterous is for everyone, but it's really not. Those who want to socially share within a walled community will continue to use Facebook. Those who want to curate their media online without as much

I myself am from a former steel/rail/textile boom area and have seen the effects of the exodus of big manufacturing in the states on a local level. I suppose a service economy isn't "icky" in and of itself - it's that people often operate
