I'm not sure how I ended up with "around 500,000" instead of the (readily available) actual number. Thank you for the correction.

Around 500,000 people died of malaria in 2018. COVID-19 deaths are currently at 250,000 (according to worldometers.info), but deaths are only just starting to slow down, and it's unclear how many deaths are going unreported. (There has

My basic issue with the lab escape theory: if SARS-CoV2 is a natural strain (and there is at this point no evidence that it isn't), then why assume some researcher was patient zero, when millions of other people catch bat coronaviruses

Just a note: a call to stop the sale of "bush meat" in wet markets is not dependent on how this outbreak started. AFAIK the practice has been considered a disease risk for some time. While obviously the pressure to do something is

Do you know of any good resources (documentaries, books, etc) on this sort of thing? (Particularly anything about government spending on pseudoscience.) After those Navy UFO videos were released and I learned that the crank Harold Puthoff w

On Twitter, there is a single type of content (a tweet). With blogs, there are two types of content (posts and comments). While it seems like a small difference, it changes behavior and appeal. When Alice comments on Bob's blog post, A

The default nixpkgs channel has over 40,000 packages. I've found NixOS compares pretty well with other Linux distributions in that regard. https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs

"Astroturf" means "appears grassroots, but isn't". It only implies deception. The amount of money spent or the scale of the operation is not that relevant.

Aye, any attempt at retirement would quickly result in a new '.io' gTLD replacing the '.io' ccTLD. The more reasonable concern is not that the ccTLD is retired, but that registration rules and/or prices are changed.

I doubt politicians are the ones putting together these slides. But yeah, the slide thing is kind of silly. Looks like they did most of the work with a 4:3 template, then realized halfway that it would be shown on a widescreen projector
