Once the hard requirement on speed impacts the quality of results it no longer helps me as a user. I'd rather have the sites invest their time in good content and wait a few seconds rather than get fast but low quality SEO-ed results.

There are better options than SMTP. Basically any message-oriented middleware / message queuing service can provide this. It's great for both sides, maintenance/outages can happen independently, as long as the queue stays onl

Or just hop on a car train (while staying in your car). It's super relaxing e.g through a tunnel, you just drive on and then off. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_shuttle_train for some examples.

I know it's not the same, but technically you could do that with every format: just ship a JPEG decoder and detect if the input is a JPEG. The other way round would be much cooler, i.e. if each JPEG XL file also was a valid JPEG.

My first ever job (in high school) was manually counting mosquito larvae in water samples for our local department of agriculture. IIRC the aforementioned technique doesn't really work for that, instead they collected samples regularly

A classic one is chmod 777 for "fixing" Linux issues. Especially once you couldn't just login as root anymore in many distros.

I like the idea, and "actionable paid insights into the future of this tool we depend on" might be a good sell. But maybe don't make it a subscription, one off payments can be easier to get approval for even if they occur eve

Interesting points, and I have to say they do ring true. The type system is definitely limited and if you compare it to Haskell I understand 100% why you'd be frustrated. And the docs are overly verbose while simultaneously not being d

Cyclomatic complexity IMHO isn't a good metric for code complexity as understood by humans, but sometimes it can be insightful especially when it's unexpected. My favorite static analysis issues are the ones that flip-flop between

No, you are both correct. You are talking about the SSPL, the parent poster you are replying to is talking about the Elastic License which does in fact prevent you from modifying the code and running it in production: See 2.2 Restrictions:

There is no need for magical thinking, but you do need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Many countries view it as a much simpler problem of optimizing their society as a whole: 1. There are N doctors & medical supplie

If you spam me with SMS or on WhatsApp for sales, I'll just block it and not buy anything. Not sure how others would react, but to me it's just as intrusive as a phone call. Unfortunately, I'm sure in 5 years no one will care

Just FYI the remote app is baked into iOS. Whenever there's text input on the AppleTV the iPhone will show a notification in the drawer that can be used for text input. It's very convenient and works well.
