Are you talking about the "phone" link on http://bu.mp to the Android App? If so, that link only works on Android phones (it is a link to the Market Place application). If not, what isn't working? So we can go fix it... :)

Bump Technologies: We are looking for smart people that fit our culture. Mac/Obj-C/iPhone/Cocoa/Android experience a plus, but not required if you are interested in learning iPhone or Android. The Bump App is one of the most popular iPhone

Dan's apology: http://www.danielbru.com/2010/02/the-line-was-crossed/ I haven't ever met the guy, but much worse things are done by 17-year-olds all the time. The punishment he is receiving seems adequate to me. Hopefully he learns from

I can deal with hardware fragmentation, but I am still concerned with software fragmentation. For instance, we (Bump) have different contacts code for Android 1.x, Android 2.x (yes they were supposed to be compatible), and HTC. Bump is no

Location can come from cell tower triangulation, scanned wifi or GPS. There are several ways we match people without location, but the vast majority are currently matched with.

The api will be free for most people. If you use it for revenue generating transactions or it is core to your app (wouldn't be useful without it) we ask for a revenue share (but no up front fee). Otherwise, as long as you don't hit our gen

Two main reasons: 1) BT does not work quickly or reliably for ad-hoc connections. Have you tried using GameKit? It takes >45 seconds to ad-hoc pair (if BT is cold) and does not always work and 2) BT is very unreliable across platforms.

Shameless plug: if you think this is cool come work with us! http://bu.mp/jobs.html There are even more exciting things on the horizon (well we think so at least).

The API identifies the phone you bumped with, and then gives the app a channel to send messages between them. You can do pretty much anything with that. :)

yes, and we are network agnostic so a user on wifi will match a user on the cellular network.

Glad to hear that! We are super excited too (and curious to see whether or not anyone uses this feature). Hopefully by time shifting this event (looking up common friends when you meet someone instead of after) and using many people's best

Part of the reason we did not enable bumping in the background is we have received lots of feedback that people like the security aspect of having to open the app for an exchange to occur (picture girls at bars having guys hitting their pho

None of the founders of Bump had a Hacker News account before applying. When YC started, I didn't get the feeling that people knew each other from HN. The last class had >50 founders, only a few of which I see post on HN.

When we filmed our video, Dave and I were in Chicago but Andy was in California. We got Andy on video chat (Google Talk) and then subtitled what he said (since the microphone didn't pick it up well). Not sure if anyone else did this... :)

Apple let's you know you are being considered (you need to sign releases and stuff) but we didn't know we had been selected until the commercial aired and our server went nuts... No need to jinx it by talking about it early! -jake (Bump)
