I've seen this so many times in my career. It happens because interviews (especially at the junior level) focus almost exclusively on line-by-line programming acumen. People who excel at those interviews don't always make great so

It's happening already. See the popular podcast "Harry Potter and the Sacred Text" in which they read Harry Potter as some people read the Bible. https://www.harrypottersacredtext.com/

Yesterday I had lunch at a Shake Shack. Humans don't take orders there any more; you place your order at a self-serve touchscreen kiosk. As I finished placing my order, I was prompted to leave a tip; 10% was the default and you had to

I first saw an Omnichord in Phox's amazing "Slow Motion". I had to look it up immediately. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUn3rZ2g5pA (It comes in at around 3:21 if you're impatient.)

LCDs are very inexpensive commodities; the Playdate has a Memory-in-Pixel display that I would guess costs a little more than an equivalently sized LCD. So I think it's partly the battery life thing, and partly an intentional aesthetic

I have a Playdate and I think they did about as well as they could to try to keep it from becoming disposable: - the device doesn't require any network connection or service and works great offline - games are generally offline only -

This is Panic's first foray into hardware and it really shows; while the device itself is very handsome and feels great, they really underestimated demand and have had a tough time getting the supply logistics under control. I ordered

If you're on macOS, a similar program named Klack[1] was featured on HN recently, too[2]. It's very polished and has a variety of different keyboard sounds among which to choose. [1] https://tryklack.com/ [2] htt

I like pass, the "Unix standard password manager": https://www.passwordstore.org/ It is very barebones -- basically a collection of GPG encrypted text files stored in Git. For that reason it's trivial to make

A lot of the reason that time seems to pass more quickly as we age is that we have fewer and fewer novel experiences; when each day resembles the one before it, whole months can disappear in lived monotony. I like to think of memory as usin

I lived in Richland (near Hanford) and worked near the facility in an IT contractor position. The mess there is truly awful; they were in such a hurry when they were building the bombs that they basically just threw anything contaminated in

I was in the EV market recently and managed to test drive an Audi E-Tron. I'll probably never forget how casually the salesman told me that they were marking them up $5K over MRSP and still had a 10 month waitlist. I walked out of ther

I test drove a Tesla and an EV6 and wound up with the EV6. Tesla's got a lot going for them but their lead is quickly evaporating.

The best keyboard controllers are made by companies that also make pianos. What I'd recommend is searching for the term "stage piano" -- these are compact instruments that are designed to be a piano first but can also be used

This used to be true, but I don't think it is any more. The Kawai VPC1, for example, contains an incredibly nice action, costs $2,500, and is a pure MIDI controller. https://kawaius.com/product/vpc1/

Seconded. I love my Nord Grand. I still use a laptop sometimes but not having to get the laptop warm/unlocked/software started in order to play is amazing. I can just sit down, flip a switch, and practice. > I really would lov

I don't think this is true because of network effects. I tend to prefer the office, but my company has a remote work option. The result is that most people work remotely and eventually I had to close down the office -- no one besides m
