Yep. I think that applies to most things in life. It's like a separate category of emotion opens up of appreciation instead of things being pure enjoyment/entertainment after you know the work that goes into something.

That's interesting. After getting into game modding, I lost most interest in single player games other than modding them/playing with mods. Multi-player FPS was still fun, but playing Crysis after tweaking some LUA files so you we

Ok, I'm glad you clarified that. It looked above as if programming would count as screen time. My parents never limited my computer access since we got a 286 when I was two, but I also never had youtube as a temptation. At age 11 I was

So the generation that grew up with free love and drugs did everything to prevent their children from experiencing the same, and the generation that grew up with free tech does the same with tech. The cycle continues.

What I don't understand is that in my locale (Atlanta, GA) the licensed regulated taxis are absolutely awful and attempt to rip you off in every way possible. They take for ever to show if you call, if they even do. They never will tak

An old coworker tipped me off to the Bunn STX 10 cup maker that was $150 or so, I bought one, and ended up buying my parents one too. Makes an entire (great tasting) pot of coffee in 3 minutes, and thermal carafe keeps it warm for hours wit

Experience matters much more than degree in the web dev/ops field. The tricky issue with foregoing college is you have to get experience first, and without experience you likely won't get a corporate position. Networking, open sou

The original Alexa trademark Amazon acquired was based on the Library of Alexandria. So, it is in fact a coincidence. :)

I can only offer anec-data from the Atlanta area, but I know multiple people (including myself) that either sold a car or removed buy a car from their plans solely due to Uber. I've heard a lot of people state they used to risk a DUI d

In the US only items bearing USPS postage may be placed in mailboxes. Many pre-built mailboxes have a separate open receptacle for newspapers etc. FedEx and UPS generally deliver to the doorstep, even for envelopes.

If you have less than $x balance or $y/mo in direct deposits, most banks charge a fee. Because what someone who makes less than $1,000/mo really needs is to pay over $100/year for a checking account. That's not including

Like many school districts across the nation, the school district has it's own police force: "San Diego Unified School District Police Department". Of course many now want their own SWAT teams. For the children!

I don't think Ponzi scheme applies at all. In this case, the value and price of a share is based on the actual revenue growth of amazon from non-investor provided income. If amazon was taking on new investors to pay out money to old on

If the company can increase the value of your share by spending the money rather than giving it back as a dividend, why would they not? Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway is famous for never having given a dividend. Amazon is still seeing goo

This is pretty neat. I've taken a similar approach in writing an irc bot using evented PHP and phergie-irc-client-react using redis to pass JSONed messages back and forth between services. It's surprising more IRC bots aren't

One of the example "traditional city" photos is actually of a touristy shopping center in Gatlinburg, TN. Taking a photo looking the other direction would show a 4 lane highway running through the middle of the tourist strip.

To be fair, rural areas are insanely cheaper to service with fiber actually. You have cities like SF where NIMBYs are demanding all fiber equipment boxes be buried underground out of sight, and all cabling has to be tunneled. In rural areas

Please remember that Verizon is also a Tier 1 transit provider! They own (via Verizon Business) the old MCI/Worldcom/UUnet backbone that was one of the largest transit providers. Level3 and Verizon are both transit providers.
