And then somebody could extort you to vote in certain way and remain at your side to make sure you comply... or steal your mail and vote for you. How is this any different from voting using an absentee ballot? Those can be stolen, bought,

Another reason non-spam/troll stuff gets killed is because it's a dupe. It's hard to find dupes when all you have is a link you want to post. For example earlier today: http://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.positech.co.uk/tal... ret

Ya that is a valid point. I've yet to work on a product which targets dial-up or older machines. The product I work on right now is for engineers who design and manufacture things. 97% of them have .NET 2.0+ with XP or Vista. The remaining

I've never had any problems with getting installers to install the proper version of Microsoft's .NET framework. As for getting the right version of .NET on the customer's box their installer works (in VS2008) and InstallShield works with n

Just an observation, but societies with vast disparities of wealth tend to be poorer overall and to have flatter economic growth. PG makes a good argument otherwise. Read the last paragraph for the concise version of the essay. http://ww

I applied the day that the iPhone SDK came out and was invited last week. (Woot!) I have no connections to Apple or any Apple development companies. So it looks like they are finally allowing normal devs in.

Right on ars. The article brings up more questions than answers. The reference to photosynthesis is indirect. I think the point of the reference is that photosynthesis stores the sun's energy and then uses it later on. And that is what his

Probably a web developer that happened to have IE up at the time. I've worked at a fortune 500 company whose IT departments won't allow Firefox. Security concerns was the official reason. Needless to say, I'm not there any more.

2. Bridge Replace with Poker for the younger hackers. I know a lot of hackers that play Poker. I imagine it's dependent on age. It's en vogue for the 20 somethings to be a respectable poker player. I just don't know anyone in their teens

This is a great idea. The target market for those who can't see it is - non-technical people. Our parents, siblings and friends... They don't have to deal with some crazy blog interface. They can just use their already familiar email interf

Ok PG's response seems almost like flamebait. I had to respond and try to voice my disagreement. I think the test of the importance of your work is not how much people will be hurt if you screw up, but how much people's lives are improved

Average whale length = 12.8m (from top google search for average whale length) Area of the US = 9.826630x10^6 km^2 or 9.826630x10^12 m^2 Area in whales of the US = 5.99769897x10^10 whales^2 So that would be 50000 times the size of 6 x 10^10

Silly as it is, that's at least a sign of progress. It means employers have now realized that you want the smartest programmers, rather than obedient ones. Yeah but that seems to be what PG is saying here.

I've used Dr Scheme with arc (technically anarki-arc). It worked with no problem on Windows XP / Windows Vista / Ubuntu / Mac OS X (10.5). It's probably the single easiest way to demo it to someone that isn't familiar with lisp/scheme. (jav

This essay reminds me of the HOPL papers ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HOPL ). As a younger hacker it provides insight to what was going on in the LISP and Scheme communities in the 80s. (Thanks PG!)

It would be nice if we could add tags to gists so we could add some meaning to the code. Plus it would make it easier to search and find related gists.

I totally agree. But that fits under a good enterprise solution. But it may be smarter to aim at healthcare specifically.
