Actually, I have first-hand experience of this process. My comment was not made offhand. It took less than 18 months from starting work as a H1B to receiving my green card. I started the green card process a month into my job. 8 How come? T

Depending on your qualifications, you can also get a H1-B job from a major US corporation and convert it into a green card. Being sponsored as the spouse of a US citizen is probably faster (especially if you are from a country where employm

We recently did a ton of customer development in this area. They are pretty good at using iPads and apps, if the font is scalable, but transitioning between apps is harder. Agreed, though, that "appliance" is the mindset to go with.

I liked this, but found it hard to retain my interest after the first lessons until I found the 'problems' section. I tend to learn way better when actively working on a problem and having to go look things up and learn them to advance, so

There are still places within Google where people can run independent projects and experimental stuff. Innovation isn't dead. :)

Then get a job, any job. It doesn't have to be programming. It'll get you out of the house, get you with other people, and put a few bucks in your pocket. If you love programming enough, you'll find time to keep it going on the side. Tota

Fantastic news. There is a huge funding gap in the UK that people bridge with grants, government money, and even loans. Early stage investment from someone like Anil will really help.

Well, anecdotes are anecdotes. I know plenty of women the same age as me (I'm 29) who also don't want kids any time soon, though more and more of us are getting married. I really don't know of any of the women I went to college with at unde

I agree that the smaller proportion of women in science means that there are naturally fewer women hacker founders, but 4% is lower than the percentages of women in science commonly quoted (anywhere from 10 to 38%). My feeling is that this

I totally agree with your comment on REAMDE and am glad I'm not the only one with this line of thought. It's the first novel of his that was stifled by its own realism. OK, maybe some of the handwavy spy technology was a little fanciful, bu

Looking at it from the other person's point of view, you can discover a surprising amount. The blog post was entirely bashing Ted, but it's pretty clear to me what happened -- Ted told his company he was going to leave (or at least hinted),

In all honesty, I only ever mention that I've been programming since the age of 6 when I'm trying to impress someone -- someone non-technical, at that, and very rarely. Technical people are not likely to be impressed, as they know exactly w

I call this the Game-For-Cats-Law-of-Touch-Screen UI: any UI feature that is too hard for a cat is too hard for your average iPad user. I am partly in awe of your skill and this extremely insightful comment, and partly terrified.
