I'm curious; what do you call people who are willing to pay for lists of potential domain names they could buy, if they're not "domainers"?

Actually, having worked with Perl during the Perl 4 to Perl 5 transition, I'd argue that it was almost as large as the C to C++ transition, though not as big as the Perl 5 to Perl 6 transition. Perl 5 dramatically expanded the options for

I think api was substituting "Management consultants" for "Scrum consultants". I don't think api was criticizing management in general.

I don't know enough about certificate revocation lists (CRLs) to be sure, but isn't it possible for individual browser users to import them? In that case, couldn't the EFF or similar organizations take matters into their own hands, and rele

I only skimmed the paper pointed to by the blog post, but one quote jumped out at me: "Hence, in an era where disk reads caused wild variation in transaction length, allowing nondeterministic reordering was the only viable option." In other

It may depend on the sort of jobs you're applying for, and there may be cultural differences. For the area I'm familiar with, high-tech non-defense jobs in the US, I'd say leave the old grades off. I've heard that in some other countries,

Over the years I've used C++, C, Java, Perl, a little Mathematica (for analysing algorithms and trying to come up with better approximations to replace expensive numeric algorithms), sh, small amounts of x86 assembly, and even Modula-2 (lon

Maybe I'm overlooking something, but in what way does Oracle's suit against Google (or the article) prove that "game theory isn't fully true"?

"The end of stuff" seems rather hyperbolic. More like "the consolidation of gadgets I don't actually use that often". The Swiss Army Knife analogy is telling: how much have sales of Swiss Army Knives affected sales of woodworking tools, ki

Recruiting is part of HR; at fast-growing companies, it's a pretty big part. Wouldn't it make sense to hire some recruiters who are able to distinguish at least roughly between good hackers and bad ones?

I found the article interesting, but I thought it was somewhat overly argumentative. In particular, the claim that immigrants take walks and Americans don't struck me as an implausible over-generalization. I liked his points about the rig

I had the impression that a large part of Sharpie's market (for their "Sharpie" permanent markers, at least) is marking physical things (writing your name on your coffee cup, for example). I don't see that market going away for a while, at

Note that the pilot program described in the article included fairly intensive support by a team of social workers. I think Gladwell mentioned one caseworker for every 10 clients?

Wait, you're taking the example of SF, where you say many homeless people prefer the streets to a shelter, and extrapolating that to conclude that "a large fraction of the relevant population" would prefer the streets to an apartment?

My impression is that Chemcor hadn't been completely shelved after its invention, just that it hadn't found any hugely profitable uses. I'm reasonably sure I've seen the brand name before. http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/gorilla_timel

One interesting possible side-effect of a post like this is that it points out the extent to which Perl is or can be used for more than something extremely simple. I suspect there may be lots of programmers who've used Perl, or seen it used

For some reason, it tickles me that on the left side where Google lists the various types of searches, it usually defaults to "Everything", but then under that there's a link labeled "more".

Better (more efficient/effective) manufacturing techniques? Or more efficient/effective marketing techniques? (I had a little trouble there with the adjective "better" applied to Madison Avenue's promotion of cigarettes).

Is the error in the 3rd parties' code, or in Twitter's @Anywhere API that the 3rd parties are calling? The article isn't clear, though it sounds like the 3rd parties are calling the API with bad data, and the API isn't checking its inputs.

I'm intrigued that no one has talked about the meta-aspects of this PR/marketing move by the UFW. How many other unions would have the guts to issue a call for workers to come take their jobs?

I didn't see that as the author's mistake, but rather as the point of the article, that a company's culture isn't what they say it is, but what they do differently.
