How worried are you that it's giving you bad advice? There are plenty of, "Just disable certificate checking" type answers on Stack Overflow, but there are also a lot of comments calling them out. How do you fact check the A

I'm surprised, but not too surprised. I read somewhere that there can be over 10 billion virus particles in a liter of sea water. There's no way we know everything in there. It's easier to see and count larger things, but w

There's a slippery slope there. Is a Word document a program? Is a PNG file? A computer program is a data structure, but data structures are not necessarily computer programs.

Unless the toaster's plugged in (and I don't see how it could be) AND as long as it dries completely, then it's probably fine. <goes to skim the article> Yeah, sounds about right.

Why is there even a Patreon app? Should've sent people to the website. You bought into the platform, so you have to pay by their rules.

I'm not so sure. Google already had a reputation for slurping up user data, even in 2008 before they bought DoubleClick. It's a no brainer that a targetted advertising company can target ads better if they have as much informatio

Yeah, the over defensiveness really does make sense here, I think. Most people won't use enough for this to be a problem, but no doubt it'll be used to push prohibition. Meanwhile, alcohol and tobacco are at least as bad, but no

Honestly, I just don't think it bothers people much. When I need a specific version of a library, I clone it to my local projects directory and checkout the version I need. Problem solved. Quicklisp is just downloading a snapshot of

IMO that's the big question AI companies need to answer. If I can get a movie summary from a real intelligence for free online, why would I bother with an AI generated summary?

I thought so, too. I'm not interested enough to benchmark it, but for all practical purposes it's instantaneous on my machine. As fast to open a new terminal as it is to switch to the existing one.

It's ridiculous that you would claim this isn't a problem. I'm typing this on a 12 year old MacBook Pro running Debian whose hardware perfectly fine, but hasn't been supported by Apple in years. FWIW, Debian supports it

I stopped using it a few years ago, but IMO it was definitely being dumbed down and not respecting users any more. Things like upgrades reseting settings that I went out of the way to change - Apple has a "we know better than you"
