Sign up at Assembla.com. It's free up to 500MB. Assembla also gives you Trac and a whole bunch of project management features. I'm using Assembla for a .NET project with Tortoise as the client GUI.

I'm convinced that Comet style architecture is the next big thing. As the libraries and tools mature there will be some pretty nifty implementations of previously impossible or extremely difficult to implement features. Meebo.com is a good

I agree with you. I guess the whole series was simply a reflection on how a CS degree may or may not contribute to your success. And, oh yeah, come work for us 'cause we'll teach you what you REALLY need to know.

Yeah. I've got a startup that's two weeks from launching (soft launch unfortunately) and I'm unbelievably excited about it. I'm giving this everything I've got because I don't think I can go another year or two not doing my own thing. I cur

The way to combat that is to convince your bosses that you completely understand why the business exists (to make money). Convince them that they can use technology to be better at that and the job will become a lot more interesting and fun

I don't think Netflix qualifies as in-house programming. IMO, when Joel refers to in-house programming, he refers to companies that have a core competency that has nothing to do with software. If you work at an insurance company or tech s

House of Leaves is so good! I have yet to come up with a good description of what it's about, but I always try when I tell people about it. I usually describe it as a story about a guy who finds a manuscript. The manuscript is a collection

I think Wasabi is very misunderstood. Creating a meta language that "compiles" down to PHP or ASP makes a lot of sense. Don't we need every advantage we can get? If doing that speeds up his development cycle and helps him support both Lin

I completely understand why you'd interview a UW grad above other candidates. You have to make an intial cut somewhere, right? As a high school dropout, I hate having to compete against those with diplomas. But I guess that's what I get fo

This is a pretty narrow list of things to look for in a Rails developer. Isn't it more prudent to find a smart developer who has a wide range of interests? Smart developers such as that would surely be able to do the job well.

I just signed up for an account with assembla and I am truly impressed. Besides the free SVN hosting they've got a bunch of other tools that'll be very beneficial to the project I'm working on. Has anyone else used this site?

This is interesting but not really accurate. If "A trend always appears as the result of the opposition with another." was true, we'd be caught in a loop between one extreme and the next. It's partially right though. When it comes to "taste
