An upcoming part of the series discusses determining what work is necessary , at a very fine level, and working to remove all else. This may seem like a needlesly simplistic exercise, but consider the example you gave: the processes need t

No, it's exactly as bad _of a language_ as everyone is saying it is. In addition, it filled a void that is no longer a void (dynamic HTML generation in a programmer-friendly way) and has rightfully been supplanted as the go-to language for

"take the big tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Apple. To them, if it is not an x $billion opportunity, it isn't worth expending resources on it." ...? Surely it's worth them spending x $billion - $1 (or some similarly small but less p

Because "everything digital" != "everything else digital". That argument is a very slippery slope, considering it can be applied both beneficially and harmfully (for whatever your definitions of "beneficial" and "harmful" are).

Um, GPL2 helpfully doesn't include mention of including source in summary, although it's there in the blue box (under "must"). Also, for someone unfamiliar, it would be helpful to explain _which_ source: the library you're including or the

I am honestly searching in vain for a point to this post. The title suggests that the fact that "founders never sleep" is a fact. The author went through a phase where that was true but now believes it's a "bad habit," without any advice on

Even if there is no relevant legal precedent, Comcast's common sense argument that the plaintiff in the case had a clear history of not using the identities of the subscribers the court compelled ISPs to release in any litigation is the kin

The author's interpretation of the argument in favor of dynamic languages seems purposefully naive. I don't think that any proponent of dynamic languages or unit testing claimed that the mere presence of unit tests guaranteed bug free code

SML. I remember at CMU, the sophmore level programming language theory course (the name escapes me, it was 15-212) was wildly different than anything I had done before. All programming courses one took up to that point were the normal intro

I would wager it makes far less of a difference than you imagine. The problem here is survivorship bias. We naturally hear far more about consumer startups because we are their target audience (in a general sense). Therefore, we hear about

To say it would be preferable if there were no profitable business model is short-sighted. It would mean that the only entities capable of undertaking something like this would be existing universities (and the wave of private companies off

I'm still unclear what the business model for universities (as opposed to private companies) in this space is. The problem is, they will inevitably be compared to (and in some sense compete against) their non-virtual counterparts. Especiall

I'm not sure I understand how your design overcomes the issues of either type of database. You'll have unstructured data like a NoSQL database by virtue of your insertion mechanism, and there is no mention of how you plan to optimize for re

Thanks to an HN story on the front page a few days ago, I learned the useful fact that any title that ends in a question mark can safely be answered "no". Saved me valuable time that would have been spent trying to decide what "reading the

This reasoning is flawed. No one said that there weren't teenagers who were the victim of a sex crime and also happened to be Skout users. Rather, the issue is that the platform was being used by sexual predators as a tool to facilitate ini

Perhaps in theory, but realistically this makes no sense. This is not a pornography site, where there is some taboo prize for lying about one's age. It's a social network, only as useful as the number of connections a user has on it. What i

I think you're a bit confused. The issue is not teens posing as adults, but sexual predators posing as teens. Appeals to the sense of honesty of perpetrators of sex crimes are likely misguided.
