Of course there will be data even if people cannot make money with it. Just less data, and sometimes of lower quality. There are plenty of examples of people writing novels in their free time. Or people writing free software as a hobby, whi

Formally speaking, the US hasn't been at war since World War II [1]. The use of military force by the US government without a declaration of war has rendered the concept rather meaningless. We are left with the colloquial acceptation of "wa

It looks like Google is turning its search engine into a global Spotlight, blurring the distinction between a personal computer and the internet. Or rather, making the concept of a personal computer irrelevant, which I think is a stated goa

No excuse for Google here. Even if these were DMCA take-down requests, AFAIK Google can ignore them if they are confident the requests are baseless. They simply lose the safe harbor protection in case the complaint is legitimate.

Thanks to the iPhone, Apple has become the largest publicly traded company in the world and stashed 100 billion dollars in the bank. They did this without winning a big trial against Samsung, HTC or Google. I don't think Apple needs to win

Sure. The question here is whether the iPhone is indeed better on every point. If Samsung's version is as good as the iPhone or better, and they still recommend to copy the iPhone implementation, then you can accuse Samsung of copying for i

Could you specify some slide numbers as illustration? I only read through the document quickly but I couldn't find a case where the iPhone wasn't indeed better. Edit: found one example: the "second hand" thing on slide 49.

Sometimes the competition does it just right and you have to make it "more similar". Many times in this case. Sometimes the competition does it better but not necessarily the only right way, for example the email indicator on slide 20. In t

As a Samsung engineer I would think "they want us to stop making crap and learn from the iPhone". These are all cases where the iPhone basically does it the Right Way. For every issue they explain why the iPhone does it well and the S1 not.

Of course the iPhone gets it right in every comparison, since the purpose of the document is to list cases where the iPhone is better and the S1 should be improved. Still very impressed by the difference in polish though.

I don't really use YouTube so I can't say, but is there anything preventing you from keeping separate accounts on Gmail and YouTube, something that makes it less convenient than if these websites were run independently of one another?

Seems to me that the article singles out Microsoft because it puts this motion in the context of Microsoft making secret patent deals with Android manufacturers: I seriously want to see those license terms, and I'd go so far as to suggest

I've been wondering why humorous comments are so rare on HN, and this one just got downvoted. Is there a rule that comments should be serious? Anyway this was at least half serious so not a good example I suppose.

The LG Prada was presented for the iF Design Award in September 2006, and won. See http://mobile.engadget.com/2006/12/15/the-lg-ke850-touchable... Edit: not sure which phone was first on the market though.

I think part of the reason why many people are rooting for Samsung here, is that in this community, in the field of competitive practices, copying is not frowned upon as much as litigating. There's no doubt that Samsung copied from Apple bu

Speaking of the format, there is something that bothers me with the aesthetics of Google+, and I wonder if the feeling is shared by anyone on HN: It feels like there is too much emphasis on the interface. To exaggerate a bit, using all the

Sorry but I think your idea would just make the language less consistent. A call is a call, it can be deferred or made asynchronous (with the go keyword). In the latter case at least it is very common to specify arguments. Having a syntax t

According to my limited experience (small tools such as a process monitor linking to libproc) it is astonishingly easy and convenient to call C code from Go: no need to write bindings, as Cgo allows to access C symbols directly from Go. I w

It is a bit easy on Apple to blame not them but the "app store" model they created for their devices and control completely. Apple has been a leader in this industry shift. Also it is not a question of physical media vs. downloaded software
