In my experience, kids already get plenty of opportunities for screen-based STEM stuff. Mine have Hour of Code that offers block programming tutorials that are relatively fun. If they're anything like we were, they'll self-teach c

Paper airplanes are a rich medium. It's fast and fun to get results, and quick to iterate on improvements. You can start to fold in physics/aerodynamic lessons and introduce them (without a lecture) on how to think like an enginee

Underrated is ordering SLS parts from a printer, like on CraftCloud. You can get small functional nylon parts made for $2 + shipping. Modeling things has always been the biggest friction point. Not easy to make CAD interfaces easier. Part f

I bought an iPhone 11 on Swappa last year to replace my 8 with a wonky camera. A lot of this is just maturation of the market. The growth in recent years came from the general population who just wanted functionality, and that itch is scrat

From what I gather, they invested in Onion News Network for IFC, and when that got canceled relatively quickly, they didn't risk online-only distribution. Maybe 2011 was too early to pivot to video? https://en.wikipedia.org&

Agreed! Seems like these systems are about 10 years behind in general, so I was pleasantly surprised that the voice system worked after a fashion. Just requires too specific phrasing to make it do stuff, and then I didn't pay to keep t

Once my Ford's infotainment system (Microsoft CE, I believe) crashed hard, and I had to open and close the door while I was at a stoplight to get it to reset. On the other hand, the voice command system works as badly as it did when I

That's the problem I have with this, that Congress is banning a company instead of the practice they're supposedly worried about. But how else is the FBI supposed to spy on us? I mean, besides the renewed and expanded FISA Section

An aside for that common ASU slander: It's a huge school (55K students on the main campus alone). It can have both a party scene and a good education. I remember it having quality departments in engineering, business, design (and there

You're right, as I understand it myself, it's more about overcoming network burps, a major point of user friction. I guess local-first is not the exact term for what I'm thinking, which is that an app should not need the Inte

I'm using Pouch/Couch on a web app, and the sync is really good DX - I got all the functionality I wanted, including easy undo, in a day or so. So yeah, what more DX would actually make people adopt local-first? I don't think

I'd say, it's to optimize for source readability. That's something many of us relied on to learn HTML, and we need to keep that path open.

There are plenty of junk apps in the App Store now. Apple does a good job marketing trustworthiness, but having competing app stores may at least get them to put more effort into backing it up.
