In programming languages, like people, maturity is a function of more than just chronological age.

Now this is getting interesting... Is there anything open-source (and language-agnostic) that's comparable to Gemstone?

It occurs to me that I could still use integer primary keys internally and have indexed strings as external lookup keys. I want the same key to be able to show (a) which user, (b) which database, and (c) which row, so I can verify ownershi

There are other reasons I want to use strings-as-keys. Are you familiar with how, say, postgres handles this sort of thing, and is it any better in this regard?

If you can rebuild the tree using only the information returned in that flat data structure, and the database performance is good, then why not just rebuild it in code? It's trivial to scale out stateless code; databases are the hard part.

I am for the moment; if postgres is really that much better in this regard, please let me know why you think so. Incidentally, I'm using VARBINARY, not VARCHAR for the keys.

Heh, I was just thinking about this problem recently; it played a (small) part in my decision to use random-ish strings as primary keys rather than autoincrementing ints. :)

At the time I wrote that, #startups on freenode was muted, with the topic line (and frequent op posts) stating that mibbit was banned by freenode, and the new #startups is on irc.mibbit.com. That may still happen, depending on whether freen

Nobody's forced to use the new #startups. You could just as easily start #startups2 and sit by yourself.

The reason people are moving to the new #startups is not to use mibbit's client (I'm using Colloquy on the Mac), but rather to show solidarity for axod.

IIRC, in one of Wil Shipley's presentations, I think he mentioned that they did this at Omni, and while the constant ringing of cash-register sound effects was nice at first, it got old fast.

I like to stick the hmac hash at the beginning of the cookie text, since it has a known length. I don't care about tampering on the client-side (since you could achieve the same effect with firebug), so js scripts can simply lop off the fi
