I think the issue is more if you ask for any amount of money it immediately turns people off. The process of putting in your creditcard number, entering your password for google play/paypal/etc is just enough of a barrier to go &#

There is no shortage of options out there, the issue is onboarding people. Even google couldn't swing it with google plus.

I can't count the number of times tcpdump has made debugging a problem a zillion times faster. It's my go to tool for any network related issue. I tend to end up using wireshark for analysis of more complicated SIP issues but I al

I mean these days having a powerful computer on my desk is less of a benefit - that can be a machine in the closet or sitting on a rack. The machine on my desk just needs to drive a couple displays and run a browser. I mean it depends on wh

My method is to turn off my mail clients 'auto pull'/notification functionality and manually pull my mail. I also don't use email on my phone. Basically the idea is I'm reserving a chunk of time (I usually do first

For better or worse, all big cities are on that path. With really good and fast transit I don't see a reason why we have to live physically near where we work though.

Maybe I don't quite understand what you want then. If you want minimal productivity focused machine just setup your system that way. Install the tools you need and call it a day?

Lot of people want eink on a laptop (including myself) - mostly for the benefit that it's readable in the sun and low power. My understanding is the refresh rate is still too slow and the cost of a large panel is pretty high. I'd

Main reason I don't exclusively use RSS (like I used to) is tons and tons of websites just provide a couple lines in the RSS feed and not the entire article. Super annoying.

You're talking to people on FB with a XMPP account? or using your facebook credentials to connect? I tried hangouts recently and the lack of message carbons made it pretty unusable.

I guess it depends on how you define 'modern' there are plenty of people working on XMPP protocol extensions along with active client & server development.

You can block abusive servers from federating with you. Ideally we could also encrypt all our posts and whatnot so the server operators can't snoop as easily. Because you don't have to join coolsocial.fake to view my social media

I think in the long run we will use a decentralised/federated system. Privacy concerns aside, it just doesn't make sense to rely on one service or expect one social network to meet everyone's needs/desires.

I'd say the big difference with google is they can treat a social network as a loss leader. Google has other (far more profitable) forms of privacy invading revenue sources, facebook doesn't. It's not a ideal solution however
