UNIX: A History and a Memoir by Brian Kernighan. Brian wrote The C Programming Language (the book), along with many other great books. He worked at Bell Labs during the time of Unix and it's a casual, whimsical telling of some of the h

I kind of agree. I’ve had very mixed experiences with LLMs and DSLs. I was writing an NRQL query (New Relic’s log query language) and wanted to essentially do a GROUP BY date_trunc. It kept giving me options that I was eager for, and then t

I'm the same way. A friend of mine bought a new couch because she wanted a change of pace, so I came over to help her. I have no idea how that couch got in. I ended up literally sawing it in half (it was an old, beat down couch) to be

Very interesting article. I'd be interested to know if a M-series Mac Mini (this article was early 2023, so there should've been M1 and M2) would have also filled this role just fine. > My preliminary speed tests were fairly sl

After getting an iPhone and exploring some of their API documentation after being really impressed with system provided features, I'm blown away by the stuff that's available. My app experience on iOS vs Android is night and day.

That extra $15 a month is for access to LLMs. They currently support the Claudes, the GPTs (not o1), Mistral, Gemini, Llamma, Qwen QWQ, Nova, and DeepSeek. It's currently unlimited access in the standard chat format. You can also choos

Absolutely agreed. Bogleheads is an absolute treasure of discussion and I've gotten some excellent tax planning advice there. It's one of the few sites in my reading rotation with HN. MMM's forum is also a classic. I don'

I'd hate to have this kind of pressure every day, but a week long sprint like this does sound like it was kind of fun. These things can _suck_ when they're out of nowhere and there's a lot of pressure, but I've also had

I get where they're coming from though. Having trailing commas work in some common cases but most other cases where there are commas would be weird and definitely result in confusion. More confusion that knowing that trailing commas ar

I still search quite a bit, but with Kagi. I've been increasingly using their quick answer feature (sufficing a query with a question mark), which prompts a RAG (I think) LLM response. It blows my mind that Kagi's output with thei

These are the kinds of stories I love from HN! Stories of theory meeting practice are my absolute favorite. My dad got me a set of TAoCP a few years back as a birthday gift (before 4b) and I realized that I do not have the background to eve

The thing I appreciate most about Kagi is their "Quick Answer" option. Suffixing a question mark on a query to give me a high quality, cited RAG (?) AI summary has been such a nice option for quick answers.

Oh thanks for the rec! I was aware that Moment was marking itself as legacy, but Day.js looks like a bonus here. Hopefully we can begin making the Temporal transition over the next few years though.
