I'm curious what courses any of you have audited (is that the right word for this?) through OCW or the other recent online offerings. I was taking a course on regex compiler design at Stanford long ago before they locked down their student

Might as well call it an "Internetism". With Steve, though, you at least get style, articulation, a sliver of grace and as much verbosity as you can stand.

I thought this was meant to disagree with my statement. This status message doesn't say Programmers = Big Boys, Designers = (What would you call it? little boys, girls, hobos?). There is power in a template paradigm. Much like MVC is for

The implication that designers are not "big boys" is offensive. I will parry with: "big boys" often wield power they don't understand to theirs and everyone else's detriment. More importantly, if all the big boys get hit by a machismo bus

I brought up some concerns about full content scraping last time this was discussed: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=542552 I used the feed for a few months but found the feed-readerized articles lifeless, frozen in time and free of d

I resent the suggestion that python has weaseled its way into anything. It rather slithers, wouldn't you say?

Just to be more more pedantic (and silly), urban dictionary has this to say: Used to describe two things that are independent of each other. One does not imply the other. "Common sense and intelligence are orthogonal. I've seen plenty of sm

This is exactly why people who learn multiple programming languages/paradigms are so valuable to these types of conversations. The problem is that reasoned and experienced thought gets thrown out with the speculative garbage.

Explicit function calling via () is one of my favorite things in the language. To each their own. "exit" merely references a function. It doesn't call by name alone. It can thus be passed to a function (a callback for example), saved to

Serious tease. I expected either the text available online, lecture videos or at the very least a courseware podcast from Berkeley. I guess I'll go back to staring at it at the bookstore...

Good point. There could be a language that made 0 trade-offs "that matter" vs all other languages. The problem remains that there will likely still exist at least one person for whom some trade-off of little or no substance is important (

I'm not super familiar with pg's RSS feed but doesn't it just provide a link to the article? That doesn't bypass the click-through to the content provider. It encourages it, just like the HN homepage.
