I do not want better UX to read and write a single file. None of the example apps I mentioned work well with R/W to a single file except maybe the image editor example. I want permission to create, read, write, move/rename files a

Apple users pay for good apps, which is nice if you’re a developer wants to make a good app and also make some money.

Literally no one wants to work like this. A save dialog every time I press cmd-s? If we shipped local file editing for Notion that worked like this our users would egg our office. For any app outside maybe like an image macro meme generator

(I work at Notion) TipTap came out after Notion slash commands so I’m pretty sure they were inspired by Notion - there are a lot of open source packages implementing Notion UI patterns these days :) Notion and Affine are actually both custo

I just found out you can sync sleep in JavaScript. I’m using it to implement multi-process sync file locks that need to interoperate with a large non-async framework (eslint). Atomics.wait(this.sleepBuffer, 0, 0, ms)

You need or want async/await in any program that has UI on the main thread, because you do not have the luxury of blocking the main thread if it’s running UI. It’s fine to have blocking code on background threads, but blocking the main

You should write your own benchmarks! I've been using mitata for microbenchmarks which is what the bun and deno people use for their cool benchmark charts. It's fast and tries to call the system GC between runs which helps reduce

This may matter eventually but right now the fact it’s not soldered isn’t helpful to buyers. I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy a machine from Apple gambling on being able to upgrade the internal SSD at some point in the distant future.

Apple upgrade price is annoying, but the thunderbolt ports mean a good external SSD can be really fast; for a desktop computer as opposed to a laptop, it’s not such a bad option.

True, but also Apple is somewhat famous for releasing “faster but worse” redesigns of their computers. Like: - making MacBook Pro thinner and faster, but now the keyboard fails after 12 months and no SD card or HDMI port - making Mac Pro a

Asking about performance, “production”, fast/slow/okay, etc is all relative and whole depends on what volume of traffic you get in production and your latency demands; without including a few ballpark numbers the conversation is p

I would expect my web application framework to handle all of these tasks, except perhaps header filtering. If it didn’t I’d rather fix that problem in the web application itself instead of adding a complicating layer of infrastructure that

CREATE TABLE etc in SQLite are fully transactional, as are updates to PRAGMA user_version which you can use to store a logical schema version number. I built Notion’s SQLite migration system for client devices on those primitives.

I guess the dependency order is nice, but I’ve been frustrated that Postgres doesn’t provide an efficient binary data format that user code can read or write easily. The SQL, text, and CSV formats are all reasonable and nice for small datab

I recently set up a Debezium / Kafka Connect cluster and didn’t need to do either of these things. I have some topics with 7 day retention, and some with 0 second retention. No full scan at all, not necessary for my use case.
