Generally speaking, I do less than 20 hours of paid client work per week. On the other hand, I spend a significant amount of time reading CS material and working on personal projects.

I can sympathize with your situation. When I started programming, I felt the same way and had similar experiences. What changed? I read SICP. Programming hasn't been the same since.

I don't think the example I've given is iterative. It generates a recursive process. You're right on a different point though, this example is much more efficiently implemented iteratively. The point was to illustrate that writing recursive

I've found this to be the case too, I think telling students that recursion is difficult artificially limits their ability to comprehend it.

I was more irritated by the fact that the entire movie was clearly ripped from the chapter "Harmonic Labyrinth" from GEB.

I was going to quit soon anyways, but now that I've been placed in this situation, I'm just torn between educating myself further or diving into a business.

I've got a whole notebook of ideas, but in particular, I've been working on some studio management software for my own piano studio. The market wouldn't be very large, but turning it into a web app wouldn't be very difficult. I'm a competen

Well that's motivational! What kind of area are you in? Is it very urban or a tech hub?

This is where the ageism and the relative inexperience comes in. I think I have a solid foundation, but being 19 and not having a ton of work experience has gotten me laughed at before. That being said, I'm pretty sure I can pass just about

I would really love to do this, although since I already took some time off of school, this isn't really an option right now :/

Haha, I had thought about the course load. It's not really a concern. I'm pretty pro at school. I'd be a professional student if it paid real money. Although, you're probably right about the business thing being way more than full time. Tha

Haha, I'm not really a fan. Not because I'm anti-social, but doing dumb stuff with lots of drunk people doesn't appeal to me. That being said, I do from time to time, since most of my friends are in the Greek system.

I have seriously done all of the exercises in SICP. I have not worked through all of Knuth. Number 4 is on my to-do list though. Also, besides myself, Eli Bendersky has. He's written all the answers in an informative blog.

I had the same thought. Hoglund is a bamf. It'll be interesting to see what goes down.

I don't recommend sitting against a wall. If you plan on meditating, I recommend investing in a zafu and zabuton. They'll provide much better back support than a wall or just the floor.

I meditate fairly regularly as well. It's interesting that I've seen meditation characterized very differently in this discussion so far. I've never particularly thought of it as "emptying your mind" or "letting one thought soak into the mi

Robert Bringhurst's book is fantastic, but if you're starting off, I recommend James Fellici's "Manual of Typographic Style."
