A single EU VAT rate would be very harmful because no gov would be able to boost consumption by reducing VAT rate, it would also force small business to collect VAT as soon as they sell their first product.

I think our wires are still crossed a little. Imagine that you are hiring for a programming position and have two available candidates. One has a degree from Stanford and three years experience at google, while the other has only fast food

I will try to address both this comment and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8680361 in one reply. I think you have misunderstood my overall argument, my claim is not that a poor person is likely to earn a higher incom

The taxable income of the couple would go down only if the maid continues the same work that she did before the marriage but for free rather than getting a different job, but this is quite a specific case that is outside of the norm.

By outwork I mean work for more hours or be willing to. If a rich person with a degree from an elite university has a higher expected per hour productivity than a poor person with no degree then the poor person can sometimes compete for the

The problem with that is that the best jobs (such as google) are competitive. Even if two people competing for the same job only want to work 30 hours per week, they both know that they can make themselves more attractive to the employer by

The GGP post describes a "personal assistant to CEO" position, in a large company these positions can be very well paid. It's also easy to argue that discrimination in lower paid fields could actually be more harmful. Taking

I'm thinking of the case where for example a female nurse encourages her daughter to become a doctor because it is a more aspirational career in the same field. OTOH a male doctor is probably not as likely to encourage his son to becom

I don't think that comparing the number of black CEOs in both countries is necessarily a good benchmark of the experiences of black people in general. This is further confounded by the fact that all ethnic minorities are a much lower %

I wonder why they did this? In the case of the macbooks and iMacs at least, it can be somewhat justified as a space saving measure. However the new mini is the same size as the old one and it's already quite tiny.

Isn't this more or less how the current system works? At least in the UK, it is allowed to nominate someone to vote on your behalf in a general election. The only difference is that candidates have to choose to stand for election under

AFAIK electoral college delegates are selected by secret ballot so they can't directly buy votes. A similar system could be adopted in theory, but you might want to know whether you are casting 1 vote or 1000. For example what happens

One of the biggest issues with this system would be that a rich company or individual could buy large blocks of votes on a particular issue. Another might be that a delegate could present a popular set of views in public for the purposes of

You need to count the array at runtime and convert to a tuple, the only way this can be done using PDO (AFAIK) is by appending the tuple to the string itself because PDO provides no tuple type.
