Somebody posted a study which showed, IIRC, that ~150 lines was the optimum length for subroutines. I really should bookmark these things... EDIT: Hooray for searchyc: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=509978

I think people might be more inclined to discuss this with you if you were willing to actually address their points. The post you are responding to makes the claim that decriminalization increases the percentage of drug users who seek reha

But the analogy is awful! It's entirely reasonable to expect good reporting from TC, and entirely unreasonable to expect MS Songsmith to produce professional-quality music.

I am certainly not a good programmer, and using this logic, you might hire me. So your list isn't perfect; however, I suspect that it's pretty good. The basic problem is that it won't distinguish between people who are really enthusiastic

There's a lot to be said for this theory if you look at the real world, where anonymous interactions play out well 90+% of the time (selon anecdotal experience.)

Cool article, maybe you should submit it. There was a similar article some months ago, but it seems to have gone unnoticed: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=248613 The NYT article you cited is way better, although I don't think there'

I got that the 2nd generation average is 48.7% and the 3rd generation average is 50.4%. I'm too lazy to find the standard deviations.

Fascinating. I'm extremely skeptical, of course. The thing that bothers me most is that they list percentages (perhaps this is the percentage of time that the rats guess correctly?) rather than $ amounts. Even if the experiment fails, exp

The article is actually not about why anti-intellectualism exists. It is about resolving the following paradox: all people are curious, but most are anti-intellectual. His resolution is that the premise is false: most people, in fact, are

I've never understood the retraining argument. Surely going from computer-illiterate to windows-trained takes orders of magnitude more effort than going from windows-trained to linux-trained. Setting linux up takes a bit of work (solving

I think the people downvoting you don't understand your point. If the vetting team told Kundra that they didn't think he was fit to be CTO, that might tip Kundra off to an ongoing investigation. The whole thing is a moot point now, because

I don't think it's memeworthy. Too much of a "you had to be there" thing. I just can't think of a situation where it would be funny to say "quick everybody lets talk about Erlang."

Besides the problems mentioned in the other comments, there are many homeless people who aren't really fit for any job, due to severe mental illness or drug abuse issues.

You are ignoring Pat's point, which is that many of the homeless choose to be homeless. So you must answer the question: should we force homeless people into shelters?

I know for many things, being relentless is a necessary condition, but not sufficient. It is very easy to get stuck banging your head against a wall instead of finding a saving resource.
