I have documented my strategy for moving from a simple MVP to a maintainable and complex Rails app. Basically I look at factors like how many objects are affected by an operation, and how complex the additional processing is. TL;DR: Use Rai

Given that the company relies on word of mouth marketing, the move makes a lot of sense. 'Experiment' is a fantastic name. My only concern is that such a generic term negatively affects findability. E.g., it makes brand monitoring

Two thoughts on this: 1) Strategy is primarily about saying "No" to activities that are not aligned with your goals and values. Here is a great example for saying no in a pretty gutsy way. 2) I have used Basecamp since its launch

What the article doesn't mention is to use this effect as a tactic to get going in the morning: Plan your day so that you stop in the middle of an interesting task at the end of the day. I find it's effortless for me to pick it up

I used to own a B&W enlarger and made prints from my own negatives. I remember the bulb in the enlarger having significantly more power (photons emitted/sec) than a smart phone display has. I wonder by how much this will increase e

Very interesting, I didn't notice the word 'Work' until I read the comments about it. I wonder what's going on here, perceptually... Maybe the similarity of the two words "Worst" and "Work" causes our

This product is relevant to me in two ways: * I am a programmer and I care about my health * I am a startup founder and I am impressed with the package Joe Kutner provides: A book, a website and a (free) IOS app with lots of resources and f

One big factor to consider when looking at US vs. Canada is health insurance. I can get my entire family insured for $133CDN/month (base insurance, no extended). I hear that this could be 10x higher in the US. With the base insurance I can

I'd like to recommend https://intigi.com as an alternative to Google Alerts. I'm one of the co-founders. We started building Intigi 2 years ago because we were frustrated with the limited query abilities of Google Alerts. Intigi is curren

I really like this approach. I use something similar for my work, however this has a much nicer API. Often these patterns are treated and discussed as an either/or decision, which I don't agree with. There are many places in an app where th

Yes, as far as I can tell, twitter shortens every URL they encounter. I assume that they want their own share of the analytics cake.

As far as I can tell, the two primary reasons for using URL shorteners are the ability to a) share long URLs via twitter and b) track clicks on shared links. The downsides to URL shorteners are: a) single point of failure for links. This on

Hi there, good point. I didn't explain myself very well. You can do this with intigi, too. You can filter both at the content and the source level. So you could set up an interest that presents you with results that a) appear in the HN RSS

I don't think this is a threat to buffer. There are two components to the buffer business: 1) the software: this can be copied or re-implemented fairly easily (see this new project). Happens all the time. Almost every product has an open so
