"Third-party" isn't really correct for regex: https://github.com/rust-lang/regex (note the org) Rust's stdlib is deliberately small in order to allow it to have very strong stability guarantees.

Talking about `unsafe` in this context seems like changing the discussion completely. All of the concerning things done in the JS supply-chain attacks can be done perfectly well in safe Rust. You don't need `unsafe` to exfiltrate secre

I guess my point was that "the Arab world" is diverse enough politically (and geographically) to not be able to be covered by a single newspaper. AJ gives you Qatar's perspective, but Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt have had stro

A fairly significant part of the Arab world would likely have a problem with Al Jazeera (funded by the Qatar state) being named as their sole newspaper of record.

Lots of banks already provide this service (spin up as many unique debit cards through an app as you want), at least in Europe and Asia where I've used it. It's often marketed as being specifically for this purpose, along with ext

This article is basically an ad for Parity, and doesn't contain any details on how those savings were actually achieved, any way to verify that the number is genuine, or any way to know whether the same savings could have been achieved

Interesting. I've always been confused by "accentless", and since I had only heard the term used by Americans, had always interpreted it the same uncharitable way as GP. Your interpretation makes much more sense. TIL!

I'm confused by your link. Nowhere on that page does it mention them accepting the Syrian Pound...?

Alibaba could already avoid that need for individual transactions by just holding balances in the different currencies, like e.g. Wise and many other retail forex providers do. They only need to deal with correspondent banks for balancing o

When did Binance start to accept the Syrian Pound? This is just the usual hand-waving that ignores all the inconvenient details.

The crypto part adds nothing to this process. There are already very efficient systems for exchanging one fiat currency for another without going through crypto.

Not really? I said they "might want to look at their overall system architecture". I didn't say "your system needs to be redesigned". Maybe it's the best it can be given their constraints. Hence the word "

Yeah, I agree. Your initial reply to me didn't mention legacy issues, just org size, and I was interpreting it more in the context of a large org building new systems the same unmaintainable way they always have because of inertia &#

I agree, there are many reasons why bad systems architecture might remain in place due to inertia, lack of resources, organisational politics, etc. I didn't chastise anyone.

In the context of a cluster, fault tolerance allows you to replace nodes without downtime. With automation a kernel update can then be a routine, low effort, low stress task. Honestly, a kernel update has to be a routine, low effort, low

The existence of small and large companies with bad systems architecture isn't an argument for implementing more bad systems architecture. Small or large, it doesn't need to cost more to design stuff well.

If you had to spend the weekend updating kernels, you might want to look at your overall system architecture. Replacing a node with another one running a newer kernel shouldn't be a stressful or time-consuming task; it's part of t

As I write this, yet again, I cannot push to or pull from GitHub repositories since about an hour now, and yet again the GitHub status page is all green. It's starting to seem like it never gets updated outside of US business hours.

Several of the recent outages were much longer (at least for us, here in Asia) than they admitted on their status page. In one case I started work, noticed I couldn't push to or pull from GitHub, that situation persisted all day, and a
